Yes, they really will have no employees if we have to wait until the New Year to get paid. I know someone will sarcastically say "that's what they want" but really things will fall apart if they don't have anyone in ATC or Social Security or the IRS. |
My agency is similar - about half are carrying on as normal and the rest of us are debating over what's excepted and what's not. It's frustrating, but at least there's not a lot of paperwork involved for us. |
What are feds going to do, we are in a jobs recession, and some random clerk from Social Security administration is not gonna get a better paying job somewhere else, their best option just to hold out until reopening. People with options already left because of doge. The people left behind are all the old ones where ageism and will make hiring really hard and the very specialized fed ones which have no other options. I have some lateral options which I have considered, but have not pulled the trigger yet because they require moving. I don’t know which point it will make sense to uproot my family because I’m never getting paid, six months? |
This. People who wanted to go and had options to do so have left. Those of us left really, really don’t want to leave (for various reasons) or don’t have other options. |
So true! I was called back for a pet project of a political appointee. But nothing can happen on it during the shutdown because all the other relevant agencies have halted work. |
But if the senate is working until a deal is reached, why would this go into the new year? Sounds like it will end sooner rather than later. |
| It’s going to come to a head in the next couple of weeks, unless they vote to pay workers. If they do that it could go on until 2027. |
I would agree that the fact that the Senate will remain in session until a deal is reached is an indication that the Senate at least realizes that it is time to get serious about reopening the government. Of course, the House and Trump are wildcards and could blow up a deal. |
Could we please not derail this thread? The other thread got derailed because of an argument about whether a one year ACA extension was on the table in mid-October and who started the shutdown. This thread is to discuss specifics about what the Senate is presently doing and what is likely to happen going forward, not the merits (or lack thereof) of what has been done. |
| I hope they also consider a use or lose extension. If not, when we return, many staff will need to use their leave so they don’t lose it, given that no leave has been coded since Oct 1. |
Current CR runs till Nov 21. House won’t convene until Dec 8: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2025/10/30/congressional-races-texas-tennessee-what-to-know/86823183007/ And then they actually have to come to agreement; Trumps stance is to break filibuster but Senate GOP is wary, but know that policy compromise will be seen as betrayal by a vindictive White House. |
That is so far away from my mind, let it go. Plenty of people in private sector lose leave because they don’t have time to use it, and many get far less vacation. It would be bad optics in current environment |
Our agency told us to put in any use or lose leave through the end of the year. If it is cancelled due to the shutdown it will be restored. If you didn’t put it on, it will not be. I had 8 days of use or lose - 2 have already been cancelled and 6 are scheduled for Christmas break. |
| My DH pretty much going to have to immediately go out on PTO once the government opens because of lose or use. Don’t care. He’ll do it along with his boss. |
Of course it will they do not care That is the point The Heritage Foundation has said this a ton of times why in the world no one is listening is beyond insane . Americans are stupid |
