My kid got As easily through 3rd grade but the strictness of the grading seems to have really increased in 4th... previously she would get As as long as she clearly understood the concept, now she gets marked down for any kind of mistakes (and fairly harshly too, i.e. she misremembered a metric conversion and so got all 4 or 5 questions completely wrong despite doing the problems correctly except for being one digit off.). Not sure if this is a teacher-specific thing or is broadly true in 4th/5th.

| OP here. Any others that can weigh in? |
Did you ask your teacher or school guidance counselor? I’m not understanding why you’re so eager to get input from a bunch of anonymous internet people |
If you’re looking for anecdotes my fifth grader has had all As except one quarter B a few years ago. CES fourth and fifth grade. |
All three of my kids get (mostly) As on their report cards. My 5th grader is in a more rigorous class and got one B on this most recent report card (she also received some Cs for badly completed/incomplete assignments last year). However, my older kids are well above average in Reading and Math - we work with them at home. Our younger one is catching up. We didn't consider them getting mostly As weird as they generally put in the effort. |

My oldest always got straight As, and was eligible for CES and magnet (but didn’t win the lotteries). Her scores in MAP tests were also in the 95+ percentiles. In ES the only B she ever got were on rare intermediary assignments, but never final grade.
My second is not as academic (boy, dyslexia, less diligent ..). He still get “straight” As for the overall grades, but he usually has one B somewhere in his report card. For example in English he will have overall A but then 2 As for reading and writing and one B for use of vocabulary. His Map scores are also more variable between as low as 75 and as high as 97 depending on the quarter and subject. Based on that I believe that he is closer in reality to a B+ student. And probably only in the top 10-5 of his class. And he still has overall As |
Very common. My kid got straight A’s recently. Sadly, I know he’s more of a B student. Not happy that his work product warrants A’s in MCPS’ eyes. |
