I usually volunteered to work. We were in the middle with regards to finances, but DH wanted no part of it.
The auction raises $ for many good services at the school. |
Actually, the donations usually go to fund scholarships for those needing aid. |
Upper middle class families in need of aid. |
We call them poor. |
Of course, funny concept of “social justice”. |
| No need to go and don't feel bad about missing either. We missed the first year at our school but then attended 6 in a row a couple years of no gala during covid times. Went to 2 more then missed the last two. I think I really only enjoyed 2 out of the 8 we attended and after missing the last two realized no one cares either way if you attended. Your absence is probably more noticeable if you are a big bidder, but that doesn't describe our family. We are just loyal supporters. Debating whether or not to go this year since we have a senior and it will be the last one. |
| We used to go and I always hated it. Now that my son is in HS I don't go to anything!! |
| At our K-8 it feels like another opportunity for the cliques to show everyone how enamored they are with each other and how everyone else is not part of the in-crowd. |
| They know only about a quarter of the parents will attend. |
| How about skipping gala night plus donations entirely ? |
You have permission to do that too. |
| To begin with, these fundraising activities are for well-off kids who aren’t really experiencing any hardship. I work hard to pay for the tuition, and I expect other parents to do the same. |
Nobody said it's about alleviating hardship, unless the funds go towards scholarships. But since they can't just issue bonds to get taxpayers to pay for things they need, they rely on donors. People who have an issue with this are in the wrong place. |
| Our school auction funds go directly to scholarships/FA. For students whose families work hard to send them to the school. Your school must have a different mission. |
