it’s not a commitment until the decision is rendered

A 100% commitment to applying ED is made when the ED application is SUBMITTED. Period.
You can withdraw an application at any time, they would lose out on nothing more than an application fee. The student is at more of a disadvantage because they missed the window of opportunity to ED at most other schools

Let's see, withdrawing ED after submitting application means: loss that school (ED and RD), lost opportunity to ED somewhere else, questions from school's counselor, loss application fee ... any upside?
The OP already said they had their reasons so what does upside matter?

Yes but you can change your mind. No harm no foul.

No they won’t. As long as it’s before a decision is made, students can change to a later application type or withdraw an application with no problem. They might be less likely to be accepted if they don’t provide a compelling reason, but it won’t be held against the school. They haven’t done anything wrong.

the colleges have made this a one sided equation with the ED commitment - sure they are annoyed if the kid already made it through the admission process but results weren’t announced yet, but perfectly fine for kid to essentially rescind application right up until the admission decision is sent. Zero backlash for school imo

Tell that to Colorado Academy Seniors this fall who are banned from applying ED to Tulane. Tell them that they haven't done anything wrong.

Yes, withdrawing ED application decision comes out is not as bad as reneging on an ED admission with no valid reason. But again, the best time to withdraw an ED application is a second before hitting that SUBMIT button.
