College Forum and Other Regions

We have been running DCUM for about 20 years. When the site was probably 4 years old, someone told me that a forum is like a child and that you could try to nurture it to be the way you wanted it to be, but eventually it would have its own personality and would be impossible to control. In the case of the college forum, this advice has proven true. I have never paid much attention to that particular forum and it has evolved organically. It has been a national forum for many years. Probably more than it was ever truly local. I don't know why that is, but that's that how it developed. I could try to implement a rule requiring posters provide their location, but it would be ignored. The Real Estate forum has a rule requiring topics to indicate the state of the particular property. It is ignored 99% of the time. I don't have the cycles to sit around monitoring that sort of thing.

This is all to say that I don't think I can really do anything about the situation you describe. Nor do I particularly want to as it seems like it would be a lot of wasted effort.

BTW, New York has a lot of people in it. I doubt that the individuals who requested that we create a New York local forum are the same ones posting in the college forum.

The NY forum isn't organized by category.

Is this site only intended for DC residents?

The assumption is that a poster is local unless they indicate otherwise. Not sure why that is so difficult for you or why you insist on asking questions specific to NY high schools in the general forum. Leads to garbage in and out .

I don't think that's the assumption of the "College & Universities" forum, which is cited frequently in other places online. It's how I found it. I don't go anywhere else on this site - ever.

I imagine we drive the traffic here from out of state. Why is that so difficult for you?

Lol, no.

As a consequence, lots of locally inaccurate info being posted, substantially reducing the usefulness of the forum, I suggest people either indicate the area from which they are posting in their heading or move posts about how kids from a NYC high schooler fares to the subforum.

I think your complaint is actually a nonsense.
My kids were at Bethesda schools from 3rd-10th grade. They then attended public school in California and are attending college (first year now) in the UK

It doesn't matter where I'm living, because I have insights that are completely relevant and recent to Bethesda schools as well as the rest.

You should be glad that a boarder perspective is present and a wealth of actual information, not just narrow opinions stated by the same 3 moms whose kids graduated 10 yrs ago. And the weird man who talks about hot girls and such. I'm sure they're based in the DMV.

You obviously think that but you give horrible advice. Admissions from CA high schools is much different than the rest f the country because schools give CA applicants a pass on test scores. Also schools seek regional diversity and have different standards for each region.

You are embarrassing yourself now. Touch grass. Get a life. You don't control the board or the dialogue. If you find the CA discussion unhelpful, move on. You can walk away. I promise you can.

Do you have people to talk to in your life? If so, you might realize how inconsequential college admissions discussions are. You keep responding to your own posts in that 3.8uw thread. We really don't care that you think the NYers should leave. They aren't leaving. Maybe you should take a short break?

Please talk to your therapist. Your constant posts about this reek of mental illness. GL to you. We wish you well.

Universities have different standards for different high schools and even school districts. For example, UMD being a difficult admit from parts of Montgomery County because there are so many applicants.

It's an anonymous board and people like that about it. You are never going to get perfectly mappable information. I suggest you look for broad themes in posts.

You are a truly lovely person, California mom. Would love to ignore you, but hard to do when you don't say you're posting from California. Perhaps I should be able to identify your posts by the level of smugness and unwarranted nasty attitude.

I also don't sockpuppet. I'm sure you are annoying more posters than just me.

OP you deserve a refund on your DCUM subscription.

I’m a DC resident who has been on DCUM since the beginning, and I really don’t understand getting so worked up about this.

More importantly, OP, Jeff has answered the question. Your assumption about the point and purpose of the college forum is mistaken, and he’s not going to change the way he’s doing things. You can keep screaming into the wind, or you can find a more productive way to channel your rage. Go yell at ICE or something.

There should really be a sticky post for people like OP who try to gatekeep who can post on DCUM, explaining how the internet works.

Wow. Where's the crystal ball that shows you any advice I've ever given on the board? You are certifiable, I think.

That person replied as if they were me, they are not. You're talking to at least 2 people here.

This place, is insane.

Sadly, college sub-forum lost its regional aura and insights ten years ago. The same thing happened to College Confidential 15 or so years ago, which is where I suspect most of the non-local spam came from. It's devolved into the same handful of shut-in dunces spamming the same worthless babble over and over.
