+1 I can give my kids the quality of life I want them to have only if I stop at 2. I don’t have the emotional bandwidth for 3 nor do I have the money for private school and spending more on our fantastic vacations. BTW there is an abundance of only children in private school. |
For us, the abundance of the only children is a plus in independent schools. |
And more working mothers. |
| Rich people are disgusting and should be shamed. |
Agree. Our K (not DC) isn’t much more than daycare, and it goes up from there but we are used to the payment. |
|
We scrimp to pay for private school K-12 b/c religious instruction and community is important to us.
It isn't lost on me that my DC's roommate at her competitive college lives within a mile and went to the local public. I still don't care - every penny was worth it for the buttressing of the faith in the classroom and halls of the school. I have ONE job and that is to raise my kids in the ways I believe is best. And college and job placements don't weigh heavily in my calculations. |
They sleep well. They have millions of dollars and their kids' four grand parents have even more. |
We make enough money that tuition for 2 kids is not noticeable. We worked hard to get to this point. So we send kids to private, have nice house, take vacations and still end up saving and investing. |
| This. Tuition is a rounding error. |
Nice that you have a rounding error of 200k per year. |
| I have 2 children. 1 in k-8 and 1 in HS. we probably have the smallest house out of my DCs friends. We drive normal cars and go on normal vacations. We do this so we can afford private education. We think It’s the best investment we can make in our children. We will continue to live modestly while we pay for college. If you’re struggling to rationalize the cost then it might not be worth it for your family. |

Maybe they don’t have 4 kids. |

I’m going to give you the honest answer: we make a lot of money. We don’t have any grandparent help. Our HHI is north of $3M (and even then I contemplate whether the $120k a year is worth it for two elementary age kids) but the tuition money is something we can afford and doesn’t otherwise change our day to day at all.
If I made under $1M there’s just no way I’d do it without significant family help. Even at $1M-$2M it would be a toss up. |
Good advice, poor people, get out and give up. |
