Opus Dei

Every guy I've met in Opus Dei has been a complete jerk.

I dated a guy in college who got involved in Opus Dei while I was studying abroad. When I got back, he was .... not the same person. He ranted at me about women being the devils's tool, blah blah blah. Nothing he was saying was Catholic doctrine by the way -- it was just wild. He moved into the "Opus Dei House" and his former roommates called his family and his siblings came to get him. Not sure what happened to him after that.

Sounds Awful.

Sounds like an excuse to put down women and feel justified that you're doing God's work at the same time.

You may have 10 kids, but you're NOT on welfare. Opus Dei is expensive. Only rich guys belong.

It’s a way for Catholics to be ok with accumulating wealth, contrary to the teachings of the Church.

This thread is just how I feel about Christianity generally.

A friend married an Opus Dei man after suddenly becoming more and more conservative and Catholic. Haven’t heard from her ever again after having her second kid. Pretty sure she’s not working anymore either. His family lived on a compound in VA.

I have family member who like to put out an image that their lives are rooted in their Catholic faith but I suspect they are anything but. They are people that are very kind and generous only if there is something in it for them and they are mostly powerful men. I suspect they are involved.
Since the Pope has questioned this organization it makes me want to take a deeper dive into what Opus Dei is all about. Are there any big names (Supreme Court Justices) that identify with this group or is affiliation kept hush?

I think Alito is Opus Dei and Kavanough too. Should be easy enough to find out. You gotta be a guy -- that I know.

Scalia apparently too.

Came here to say that.

My mom's best friend is Opus Dei and I have known her for forty years and know her and her kids well so I've gotten to know a lot about it. At least in her family, education is highly valued, even for/especially for the girls. Everyone went to a top school and then grad school and continues to work after having kids. The biggest thing is just daily, constant Catholicism. This isn't a Christmas and Easter type religion. It's mass every day, hair shirts, lots of retreats, participating in every single sacrament.

They weren't super into this but I know other OD women who are very into the liturgical year and celebrate every feast day. Check out Kendra Tierney. I believe she's OD or at least her late husband was. She has ten kids.

Not to make this bleed over into the politics subforum, but this is a problem. When judges, especially Supreme Court judges, have blatant religious influence in their decision making, you wonder why atheists have been so vocal about separating belief from reality in these threads.

If a majority of justices said they were Flying Spaghetti Monster adherents, would you theists here be as supportive? Would you continue to say that their decision making abilities were fine?

I question the ability to make reasonable judgements by anyone who believes myths as facts.

Interesting, thanks. What strikes me about these people is that they are just as much cafeteria Catholics as liberal Catholics. Kendra hates Francis and Leo. They basically don't believe in Papal infallibility. They don't follow a lot of the Church's teachings about social justice. Yet they are the True Super Catholics. It's so hypocritical.

But Christianity generally is nothing like this. These are extremes. That's like not wanting to swim because the idea of swimming the English Channel alone sounds nuts to you.

They definitely are not the "True Super Catholics" to Catholics.
