True. But that was a very high paying position that was created for Rice. Albornoz's new job is an existing appointed position. |
| The Craig Rice one was really bad. I forgot about that. |
| Montgomery County Council has received 67 applications from people to fill the seat currently held by Gabe Albornoz (D-At-large) when he steps down next month |
I hope they pick someone decent. |
Secret processes to fill legislative vacancies usually work out really well. |
I disagree that it is secret. They needed to encourage people to apply and putting applicant's name out there, even if they don't get to the interview process, can have significant consequences for people, particularly if they are holding other jobs and haven't notified their employers. Secondarily, people on the internet are horrible to public servants. Why put people through that for no reason? Why get them potentially doxed when most won't make it very far through the process? The people who make it to the interview process will obviously be public. As those interviews will be public. Like when Councilmember Ervin vacated her seat. https://montgomerycountymd.granicus.com/MetaViewer.php?view_id=150&clip_id=6361&meta_id=58263 You know what would be helpful though? IMO anyway, a demographic breakdown of the 67 applicants. Race/ethnicity/gender/age/area of the county they live in. Since we get overrepresented by Silver Spring folks. Then we could see whether the selected interviewees are representative of applicants. |
Yes, a demographic breakdown would be helpful. I don’t have a problem with the applications being secret (so long as a demographic breakdown is provided) but any interviews should be public. As of now, the first round of interviews will be in closed session, and only one candidate may have a public interview. At the very least, a video should be released of the successful candidate’s interview. On the other hand, if you’re going to hold public office, you should be comfortable with your application being public. I would rather a vacant seat than this process. |
Who are those 67?! |
It might help Councilmembers pick someone who is actually good for the job, rather than feel pressured to bow to the political pressure out there to bring on certain people. The democratic party is very cliquish after all. |
Because Silver Spring is a large area. No one knows where it ends. Is it Wheaton or Silver Spring? Is it Colesville or is that also Silver Spring? People in those areas need representation if you lived there you would understand. |
They’re going to pick someone they all agree with and don’t want their own litmus test questions to be public. |
Oh shut up |
|
Surprised nobody has commented on the three who will get interviewed.
My guess is Shebra Evans. "Former school board member Shebra Evans, dentist and member of the Asian American Political Alliance Henry Lee and former Silver Spring regional services director Reemberto Rodriquez will be publicly interviewed during the council’s Dec. 2 meeting." https://www.thebanner.com/politics-power/local-government/montgomery-county-council-announces-3-finalists-for-albornozs-seat-2CGAP7O4DRGRZH3CHPCFYAPCZY/ |
| Jfc people, there are so many elected officials that deserve to be bashed, but Gabe Albornoz is not one of them. He was Rec director before being elected to council. This isn't some random job he isn't qualified for. |
So now MCPS BOE is the first step and seems like they then move on to County council. Wasn't Lee also on the BOE at some point? |
