Unpopular opinion: I can't wait until we turn the clocks back

My body is very sensitive to time changes, I would do better with just keeping to one time all year round - the natural clock.

That might work for your family where you live, but in some places, sunrise in winter under permanent daylight savings wouldn’t happen until 8:30 or 9am.

Different poster than you quoted though, I posted earlier wishing that DST would be permanent.

I know it’s awful to get up and go to school in the dark. My kids had to catch the bus before 7 to get to middle school and high school, and when I was in school, I had to leave about 6 when my mom went to work and wait in the dark parking lot until my father got off work from the night shift, hopefully in time to get me to school.

If changing the clock could keep kids from walking to school in the dark, I might support it. But as your post points out, if sunrise doesn’t happen until 9 am, kids will still have to walk to school in the dark on Standard Time, even if it’s fewer days than they would on DST. If parents and schools have to make provisions for getting kids to school safely in the dark, anyway, we might as well give kids the daylight in the afternoon when they can enjoy it.

I agree with you OP. I hate daylight saving time.

Agree. It really ruins my life when the evenings get dark. I feel a slight depression almost immediately. Evening walks not as good, evening going out to kick a soccer ball around—basically impossibly. The cold combined with dark is the worst thing to happen all year.

Tv shows, the gym, food get me through it. Those are the only bright parts of half of the year.

If you make this a thing on twitter he might go for it

With schools being the reason, school systems should adjust their calendars & schedules for this reason.

There should be MORE school in the summer when there is plenty of morning/evening opportunity to get sunshine

There should be little to no school in December and January.

Same. And while I would prefer longer daylight into the evening, the short days are short days anyway you slice them and I would be more okay with picking either standard or daylight time than switching twice a year. It takes me two weeks to adjust every time. Same with my dog!!

My other pitch is to move Halloween permanently to the last Friday of October.

I agree OP. I lean heavily into hygge - blankets, candles, fireplace, tea. I also sleep better in the dark and cold (in summer I wake up at 6am, even with blackout curtains) so I will be more rested. Plus, end of fall sports, praise the Lord.

+1

In the morning all you’re doing is going to work or school. Afternoon is the time people can really enjoy and use the daylight. For a country that desperately needs more exercise, we should be lengthening the time for outdoor activities. We need to make DST permanent and keep that extra hour of sunlight in the afternoon.

I exercise in the morning before work. I want the light in the morning.

We are also a country that is very sleep deprived, so it stays light too long in the summer.

So maybe we should do the opposite - instead of falling back and springing forward, maybe we should fall forward making current DST the fall schedule (so we can enjoy the brief sunlight in the afternoon and still go to bed reasonably early), and spring back, setting the clocks an hour earlier than current DST (so the extra sunlight is in the morning before the heat of the day hits, but the sun will be setting earlier and disrupt less sleep).

I can’t wait for the long sunny days of June
