High school season almost done

George Marshall beat Langley last night per MaxPreps, if true that’s an upset. Agree no top level teams this year in NOVA inner burbs, playoffs will be wide open. Best team I have seen this year is James Wood, should meet Courtland again in finals which will be another classic. Most talent ever saw in a public school match was 22 final Alexandria vs. Colgan.

Last week is here for Va volleyball. Wonder if we will see any upsets. Good luck.

Lots of talk about RM here but nothing about Wootton?! Wootton has been playing extremely well and beat RM!

Congrats to all the ladies (and parents) who are in the VA state playoffs starting Saturday. Winning a state title is something will cherish the rest of their lives. Anything can happen with high school results, but my picks below.

Pre states VA top 13: James Wood, Riverside, Courtland, Colgan, Madison, Flint Hill, Paul VI, Colonial Forge, Patriot, Marshall, BOC, Langley, West Springfield.

Class 4: James Wood is the most accomplished team in the state, beat Flint Hill, Georgetown Day, Riverside. A champion of champions. Courtland is also in Class 4 and a top 5 VA team as well, unfortunately they are slotted to meet in the semis. James Woods ends up beating Grafton for title.

Class 5: Riverside is heavy favorite, beating Kellam in final.

Class 6:
West Springfield/Patriot - This will be at West Springfield who have not seen play since early in the season. Patriot a slight road favorite, will need to deal with gyms low ceiling.
Grassfield/George Marshall – GM beat Langley (defending champion) twice and kept them from states, so respect to them. They travel to Grassfield, but should prevail.
Patriot vs GM - go with home team which I think will be Patriot.

Colgan/West Po - Colgan to win. West Po has a .500 record and ended up in states; Region C misses Alexandria HS’s golden generation, 2 championships & 2 semi finals in 5 years.
James Madison/Thomas Dale - James Madison to win.
Madison vs. Colgan - go with home team which I think will be Colgan. Should be great match.

My pick is Colgan . Madison or Patriot winning would not be a surprise though.

It would have been nice to see if Fairfax could have played against some of the state's best (other than West Springfield). In perhaps the program's best year ever, Fairfax (2nd to WSHS) lost to the Spartans three times ... and it would have been tough to beat them in a fourth contest had they met in the regional final. Unfortunately, West Potomac eliminated FHS in the regional semifinal match. One of the FHS starters had been out the entire postseason with an ankle injury. Would have been nice to see strength-on-strength against WestPo ... and potentially WSHS, but injuries happen.

Without checking the win-loss records, I think WSHS has only lost two matches all season (one of those to Langley, I think). They are balanced across the front row, making it easy for their setter to pick opponents apart. No one player outperforms the others as they are all solid. It wouldn't surprise me if they win the state title and make a deep run next year. I witnessed Colgan lose to Oakton ... and ?Flint Hill? ... at a tournament earlier in the season. Not sure how good they are against capable opponents.

As far as club representation among some of the remaining HS teams, WSHS has current and former Paramount players in the lineup. I think Patriot has a few VAJRS players, as does Potomac Falls (at least one). Riverside and Madison have Metro and VAJRS. I suspect that there are players representing other clubs, but I just don't know all the affiliations firsthand.

I was surprised Fairfax good this year and is disappointing could not get into states, agree probably the most successful team they ever had at least in my memory.

WSHS probably needs to test themselves in a tournament other than Titan Clash next year against superior opponents, their schedule is weak with their conference teams level not high. Last year they had one of the best players in the state and were swept by Langley in first round of states, would have helped to lose some competitive matches against good teams early in season in my opinion.

Actually, WSHS lost to Langley in state semis, not quarters. The team is a lot more balanced this year than last, even with the graduation of one of the top players last year.

Congrats to West Springfield, Grassfield, Colgan, and Madison for advancing today; semi finals Tuesday.

The next level down were totally competitive with each other and then there were a few that were not competitive at all. There is definetely a socio-economic factor at play - the more well off schools had club players and the poorer schools were just kids who showed up to try a sport.

Is RM a one-player show now? I saw on their instagram that this player had 32 kills with .315 hitting in a 4-set game. That means hitting more than 100 times in 4 sets.

RM Varsity is full of top players from top clubs. The incoming freshmen class had so many club players that even JV coach turned some of them away. The Varsity is definitely not a one-player show, even though I think I know who you are talking about. She might be the most effective scorer, but the other players are not too far behind: they have good setters and good defense as well. My DD is unlikely to make Varsity with all the talent on that team. It's a bummer and I don't know if she will have a HS sport next year because all her eggs are in the volleyball basket.

I think adults talking this specific about a high school girl is creepy. Cut it out

I don't see what you see. The discussion was about RM being a real team or a one-player team. There was nothing inappropriate said about any player. Creepy is in your mind.

Yes, the creepiness is entirely in their minds.

This is the sort of person that asks "why do you care so much about xyz, that's creepy" when they are losing an argument.

ISL ended. SR won Field Hockey, Volleyball, and Tennis. What are the other results?

Stone Ridge won the lower A Division for ISL. GDS won the upper AA Division and will likely be the team to beat for the next few years. Bullis had a drastic fall from winning the ISL AA championship last year to going 0-7 in ISL play. In addition to losing most of their top players, Bullis also lost their coach of the last few years. Flint Hill only went 4-3 in ISL regular season play and lost to GDS in the semifinals, but made a surprising run to the VISAA state championship beating Bishop O’Connell in the semis and Paul VI in the finals.

Madison went down last night to Colgan. Riverside is still on the path to states after a quick 3 set win.

In Maryland 4A, Churchill beat RM 3-2, Broadneck beat Churchill 3-0 and then Urbana 3-0 to win the championship.

In 3A, Howard beat North Hagerstown 3-1 to win the championship.

Howard lost only one set during the regular season and beat Broadneck 3-0 in October.

Howard is probably the best high school team in Maryland this season.

If any saw Howard vs. NH, would love a report. Lot of talent on those two teams.
