If you lose weight with GLP-1, what do you tell people?

I think people are just more careful about commenting on appearances these days. I also work in a male-dominated industry, so that could have something to do with it as well.

This. No one says anything. If they did, I'd respond in a way that I felt was appropriate to the situation/person. I wouldn't lie about taking the meds if asked directly and I might volunteer it to someone I'm close with - I think they're great.

I agree that people seem to be much more conscientious as it relates to weight loss. It is not anybody's business. But, it is definitely character flaw if you are openly and LOUDLY proclaiming some miraculous life change without also including the fact that GLP-1 drugs are the basis for that life change.

I’m in that situation now and I tell people the truth: I had a few health issues arise all at once and the one clear solution for all of them was to lose weight, so I’m taking ozpempic to accomplish that.

I did not say anything about it, but did regain eventually.

I have lost 30 lbs since June and also on a leadership team. No one has asked directly if I'm on meds but people have commented on the weight loss. I have said my labs were terrible and it was a health wake up call - which is true.

FWIW, I am also just working out a ton bc I've lost the junk weight and am eating super healthy. I also say I'm back in running shape, and lifting 3-4x a week - also true.

Dont let a question someone may or may not ask you be the thing that gets in the way of you taking back your health.

I've lost 70 pounds, and never been happier. When people mention how I look, I know they want to know if I'm taking the drugs! So, I immediately offer with a "Wegovy" (sang in the tune of Agony from Into the Woods), and then I tell them it's the best thing that ever happened to me. Pretty much ends the conversation!! I couldn't care less what others may think about it! They can do it too if they want!

One of the things holding me back from taking the meds, is I really (really) don’t like attention that comes from appearance change. For example, when I get a new haircut and people notice and say something, I get very uncomfortable.

If I lose weight quickly and people say something innocuous like “you look great” or less innocuous like “you look great, how’d you do it?” I am dreading it and don’t know what to say.

Fwiw, I’m an executive at a company so have lots of visibility so I envision this being a constant.

If you are/were in a similar position, with the same disposition, what did you do to cope? Thanks!

Totally understand your anticipatory discomfort. I’ve lost weight a few times and I hate this. People are so nosy. I just try to brush them off. Don’t let their lack of boundaries hold you back from doing what you wish with your own body.

You’re not fooling anyone sweetheart

I'm like you OP, it makes me really uncomfortable when people talk about my body. For me, the weight loss was indeed very fast so many people comment. I don't say I take GLP1s not because I'm trying to hide it, but just because I don't want to continue the discussion in general. I just say I'm eating much less than I was before (which is true) and quickly change the subject.

Meanwhile, there is a 70 something-year old grandpa on my street who first asked me if I was sick. When I promised him I did not have cancer, he proceeded to pester and pester me about how I'm losing weight and wouldn't give up no matter how much I didn't answer. Buddy, I'm a 5ft tall pre-menopausal female, you're a burly, former linebacker-type elderly man, our bodies have nothing in common and our weight loss journeys are not going to be related. Plus, you were not complimenting me with your sickness talk so clearly I'm not going to be open and vulnerable with you.

I've just about reached 100 lbs lost and im close to being at goal and have noticed a big shift in people's reactions since the last time I was on a major diet a decade ago. Literally no one at work has said anything at all. And in my personal life, only 1 or 2 family members have said anything and they haven't pressed me on how I did it. It's a little weird to be honest since I was also expecting to have to deflect unwanted comments!

This sounds like bliss.

I usually say "oh you know, it's a mix of things." Because it is. The drugs helped with appetite, the weight loss helped with exercise, and I've also had to change my diet to focus on more protein and fiber. It's none of anyone's business, and they will all assume you are taking a GLP-1 anyway.

You can say "sorry, talking about weight makes me feel awkward!" Then quickly ask them a question to change the subject.

It’s not fast for regular people.

I think celebrities convince their doctors to prescribe ridiculous doses and they end up with dramatic results.

I have several family members on ozempic and I see them every few months. One guy lost 10 pounds but still had a big gut. I would not have guessed he had lost any weight unless he told me. Same for the others. The doses prescribed to regular people are very low and slow acting.

No one is saying anything. I wish they would! The drugs made me drastically change my eating habits, which you could always comment on too. It’s easy to say your changed your lifestyle and that wouldn’t be a lie for me. You don’t have to tell people your personal business. I’ve lost 40 lbs in a year and no one has mentioned it at work.
