Yes. Every company needs to pay bills, collect revenues and issue financial statements. Accountants are the people who do this. Every small company needs at least 1. Big companies have hundreds. This is why accountants are always in demand. Companies need to perform all these functions all the time. Demand doesn't go up and down with the economy. It's a very stable career path- with a growing shortage.

Yes and no at the moment. Big 4 are laying off and implementing AI. They are not worried about a shortage right now.

There are also accounting firms that do nothing but. Local and state governments also employ CPAs.

I’m debating doing this (early 30s). I’ve spent several years in general ‘management consulting’ but my favorite roles have been doing PMO: I liked being heads down doing the project financials. No idea if I’d be any good at this but I also keep reading about shortages.

Anyways - I think you should give it a shot!

NP. What do you do, and how much do you make? I’m interested to know about your expertise re: CPAs and the cap on their income.

I mean a MBA with CPA can go any direction. So I don’t see a $200k limit. I just helped with interviewing for a position that was an advanced senior accountant maybe could be called accounting manager, but a team of 1, for $150k.

I’m also interested in hearing from CPAs making above $200k. Are these primarily roles like CFO? Or is there more variety of what you can do with the certificate?

I'm a corporate controller and make about $260K. Have both a CPA and MBA. Competition for high level finance jobs is always fierce and a numbers game. Retiring soon but will do interim and fractional work to keep busy. Leaving because commuting and face time demands suck. OP, there is always a need for financial reporting and tax.
