Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
Yawn. |
How truly bourgeois. Eschewing a school like Edison because of the diverse student body and the resulting "very, very average" scores. The lessons that can be learned in schools like Edison are just as valuable as the lessons learned in the elite schools you so obviously esteem and the exposure to diversity is just one of the intangible benefits of attending Edison. I'm glad people like you avoid the Edisons of the world because you are really the one who's medicore. |

Interesting. Here are some stats on high school enrollment changes comparing September 2010 to September 2009: Annandale 2600 (-49) Centreville 2287 (+39) Chantilly 2620 (-6) Edison 1658 (-71) Fairfax 2375 (+20) Falls Church 1525 (+132) Hayfield 1959 (+61) Herndon 2240 (+29) Jefferson 1811 (+19) Lake Braddock 2571 (+139) Langley 2018 (-52) Lee 1815 (+13) Madison 1987 (+50) Marshall 1574 (+136) McLean 1924 (+61) Mount Vernon 1719 (-95) Oakton 2250 (-124) Robinson 2696 (-61) South County 1956 (-34) South Lakes 2087 (+229) Stuart 1707 (+33) West Potomac 2207 (+116) West Springfield 2262 (+13) Westfield 2883 (-17) Woodson 2122 (+19) Some of these changes are pretty easy to understand. Falls Church, Lake Braddock and South Lakes have all had additional students redistricted to their schools over the past few years, and Annandale, Oakton and Westfield have all had students redistricted from their schools. It's less clear, though, why schools like Edison and Mount Vernon are losing students. |
We live in the Edison district, in a neighborhood that has had many older residents. The neighborhood is very convenient for commuting, but has relatively small houses by modern standards. So, as the population ages, the houses are filled by families with very young children, who (unlike us) will probably move if they can by the time their kids reach HS. I realize one neighborhood doesn't account for an entire district trend, but it is what I see. |
We're in the Edison/Mt Vernon area and have seen the drop in population at the elementary school level as well. Anectdotally, it appears to be related to the large number of Hispanic families moving out of the district because of the economy. There have also been a lot of foreclosures. Our local elementary school went from 5 kindergarten classes to 4 because of reduced enrollment. |
| I went to lane and i loved it there, then i went to twain but most of my friends went to hayfield! in 8th grade i took the TJ test. I got in and went to TJ. My friends as twain that went to Edison said that they liked it. |
OK, since all schools are equal and all that, what schools in the DC metrao area, are to you -- completely failing? |
I don't know about schools in the DC metro area, I just know about the ones in Fairfax County and would be comfortable sending my kids to any of them. |
Which zone do you live in? (Madison here) |
