When (if ever) did your kid(s) start enjoying some classes/subjects, and which ones?

ES was tough at the end because he had outgrown it and the way it was being taught. He was even told in maybe 2nd or 3rd grade that he should stick with graphic novels and that chapter books were too advanced. The ES school teachers didn’t try to push them if they were on grade level or above. In MS the English teachers would recommend or lend off-curriculum books all the time and take time to chat about them.

That's great... would you mind sharing which middle school? Although I hope this experience is common across multiple schools...

My kid is in compacted math in 5th grade and just took the 6th grade map-m. Scored 50th percentile for a 6th grader as a 5th grader which is pretty awesome.

I’ll always wonder what her reading fluency would be like if MCPS adopted the science of reading befofe she started school

You always had the option to supplement at home...no need to wonder. It's still on you to raise your own child. Stop relying on schools to do it for you.

Two of my three always loved school and their classes. I particularly remember they liked foreign languages, psychology, calculus and an AP writing course. History, especially government were favorites.

These two are also loving college with one exception. One has not liked the English writing classes.

My third did not like school until he got into Edison. He has severe learning disabilities that made school excruciatingly painful for him.

Does anyone have a kid who previously disliked school but enjoyed ELC? Or were the kids who loved ELC generally pretty positive about school and classwork already?

MCPS all the way.

My kids loved it.

They loved it at college too when they were so prepared.

Loved elementary.

MS loved everything but languages & art or PE teachers stunk in those subjects at our schools.

HS Loved all computer classes, science, math, AP Lit all AP's they liked.

I was teaching them at home before my kids started school, and I was also very active in volunteering at their school. So, they always liked school and learning.

Being in magnet program with other smart kids made them love school even more. Its a shame that these gifted programs are becoming extinct now.

My child always liked school well enough despite learning very little and then they LOVED ELC last year. Had the best year ever. They hate this year and the “accelerated CKLA” which is not at all accelerated nor is any meaningful above level enrichment happening in WIN time. So we are hearing more complaints about school than ever before.

You should get in touch with AEI to complain. They are the ones who wrote the enriched CKLA curriculum. They should get feedback on how implementation is going

Yes. Kid generally disliked school or just tolerated it. Like it better as they got older, developed more meaningful friendships and had ELC + Compacted Math.

I think it is kid dependent and can also be so teacher dependent. Our daughter had truly excellent math teachers in elementary school. They were engaging and made math fun. Our son had several years of deeply underwhelming math instruction at the elementary level.

One of them still loves math and the other does not.

Office of Accelerated and Enriched Instruction: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/enriched#tabs-1

Head of the office is Kristie Clark, I would email her directly: Kristie_L_Clark@mcpsmd.org

I doubt she gets to call the shots on this though, it was probably a decision from above her that she was asked to implement (although maybe I'm wrong about that ) So I would also email or higher-ups and the Board-- the Chief Academic Officer Niki Porter (formerly Niki Hazel) Niki_T_Porter@mcpsmd.org her assistant/deputy Angela McLane Angela_M_Stevenson@mcpsmd.org, and maybe Superintendent Taylor and the Board of Ed too.
