3'rd grade - NGAT

Don’t bother taking any more testing. The current results are high enough. Collect good work samples because typically the ones from school are terrible. Write a nice cover letter on why your child needs AAP and make sure you show over grade level quality which gets a bit harder as the kids get older.

I’m curious as to just how bad the HOPE score was last year? Your kid already has amazing scores, higher than my current AAP kiddo. I can’t believe yours got denied!

My older boy got rejected with 160 NNAT and 146 CoGAT, he got in on an appeal with a WISC score of 154. Just know that there’s reverse discrimination in the AAP selection process. Sometime a WISC score is needed so they can’t find any excuse to reject your kid. Parents can file lawsuits with the state.

If they can get into 999 society with that IQ score, there’s no reason why they can’t get into a county’s gifted program.

Except that they don't bill it as a gifted program, and it's partly a kind of affirmative action program. Kids considered disadvantaged get experience points, Young Scholars get bonus points, and teachers are supposed to complete the HOPE evaluation by comparing the kids to others in a similar group.

My DD had high NNAT/COGAT scores, but initially rejected. We were advised not to retest, or even bother with WISC, because testing wasn’t where the gaps were.

We appealed with better work samples and a thorough parent letter. Unfortunately, and truthfully, a lot of the admission process is random based on who evaluates your child. If you get rejected, appeal. If your appeal is rejected, try again next year. It’s annoying, but what you need to do.

Collect new work samples that counter the bad HOPE scores and also remember AAP stops after 8 and some kids stop after 6 to attend particular MS so you may be better having your kid read, advancing math outside school and taking an essay writing class.
