What's going on at CCES?

Does CCES normally have a "steady roster" of teachers? Why are people worried about what's happening there?

CCES hasn’t had a lot of turnover in recent years. This year there will be a new assistant principal plus what looks like four new classroom teachers, two new special education teachers, and MCPS’ website shows fourth and fifth grade teaching jobs listed.

I'm sorry they lost their reading specialist. She was terrific.

OP here -- yes, that's why I posted. They lost some really good teachers last year and then this big shift this year. Maybe turnover just happens in phases. But I have also heard that the new principal hasn't been very present. Jody was a lot but she let very gifted teachers do their thing. I hope the new principal is keeping that up! I also hope she hires as well as Jody did.

In my own experience, the principal wasn't present early in the year due to back to back family tragedies. The former AP was not really capable of doing the job, and while MCPS did send in a series of subs to cover in this role it meant there really wasn't much in the way of leadership in the building at times.

I hope the new AP will be a good one and I hope that the principal will be present this year.

I see some teachers that have moved to other positions... the new reading specialist looks like a previous 5th grade teacher. I have high hopes!

Yes, she is an excellent teacher — glad they were able to retain her. She will be great in that role.

The turnover was absolutely tied to the change in administration and the school is falling apart.

My kid is there and I see absolutely no indication of this.

I know that a few of the teachers retired and one left to pursue a career unrelated to teaching children.

The principal was new last year, and she was out a lot due to a series of family related issues. As a result, I don’t think she really even made her mark on the school, so I don’t think you can blame her for teachers leaving.

I agree with the PP’s observation about the principal and assistant principal issue last year. I think there were more discipline issues last year due to not having a consistent assistant principal, but that issue has been corrected.

The new principal is still an unknown quantity at this point.

There has been a lot of turnover (although at least one teacher lateraled into a specialist position and one other teacher just changed her name), and it is due to the new principal. There is no love lost between her and the teachers - or her and the PTA.

Has anyone heard about the recess issue? Kids are complaining about half of each recess being taken up with rules and lectures from the recess aides. Ask your kid about it. I know some parents have tried to address it, not sure if it's been fixed.
