Yes. Try to imagine a work environment where it’s normal to get cussed out, have chairs thrown, fights right outside your door. Not exactly a nice place to work. |
What’s your alternative? Bring back suspensions? That’s been shown to be racist. Expulsions? All that does is support the school to corporate prison pipeline. And this is America; every student is innocent until they are proven in a court of law; besides: what about their education? Don’t they have a right to an equal education too? Can’t do that if you are constantly suspending kids (plus their acting out really isn’t their fault. If they got the wrap-around services they deserve then none of this would be an issue.) |
Money can only do so much, but who do you think is going to pay for all of these wrap around services? Also, "not the kid's fault"... at what point is it their fault? Whey they are 20? |
Hello. I’m a kid who went to NEC schools all their life. Till now. Come a few weeks, I’ll be in a Catholic high school. I’m a Black American boy, and for 10 years I’ve witnessed fight after fight, curse-out after curse-out, and just overall heinous groundskeeping. Despite the fact that I’m in a group that’s the most suspended, I’ve never been. I go to school, mind my business, come home with no issue. Half the fights are about the dumbest 💩 known to man—stuff like “Oh I stole your 🐕 what are you gonna do about it?” or some dumb Instagram beef. And these kids never get any kind of repercussions. They look at me weird for going to class like a normal human being. I absolutely think that expulsions should be brought back. There’s no reason—with the COL as expensive as it is—that my mom has to pick up a second job to pay for private school just so I can walk to class without seeing a daily fight in the hallway. For people asking if the NEC schools are that bad: they are. For extra info, my journey was this: Burtonsville Elementary (2015–2020) Benjamin Banneker Middle (2020–2023) Paint Branch High School (2023–2025) |
Suspensions- absolutely! They are no implicitly racist. Have clear guidelines as to what leads to suspension, then don’t worry about it. If one group gets suspended more, then they deserve it! Expulsion- absolutely! These are the kids who will end up in prison anyways. Do you know how hard it is to get expelled? Every kid has a right to an equal education. Your little dream world ignores the 98% of kids who are well behaved and want to learn so that 2% don’t feel bad about their behaviors. Acting out is their fault failing any special needs. And even those students need consequences for their actions. Things should be fair so that all kids feel safe in school. |
Yes. Some were outright bullies on the leadership teams. |
Boom. Thank you for speaking up. So many people want to insist that Black students and families are ok with violence, chaos and a lack of accountability going on in MCPS schools and we're not. At the same time, we have to be able to chew gum and walk at the same time. The truth is many punitive student discipline HAS been racist because, particularly with the most subjective infractions, Black students are over policed or not given the same grace as their white counterparts. You even hear this from White parents in Bethesda/Potomac elementary schools who get exasperated by privileged White boys who get to terrorize and tear up classrooms without consequence because their mom or dad is a lawyer, wealthy, on the PTA, etc. whatever role or status affords them privilege or protection. Whereas that same behavior in a Black boy is coded a special education and/or suspended and expelled by the same system. But fixing that disparity in treatment is NOT an invitation for NO discipline or consequences in school and is in fact racist. Black students deserve a safe and stable learning environment. |
As a teacher I agree 1000%. MCPS has a does of lip service, but they sure do not do any action to help keep all kids safe and ready to learn. |
| They don't keep teachers safe and secure either that is why many of us have had to leave the profession. We can't teach kids that are not behaved well enough to learn and when there is chaos in the classroom the good students can't learn either. Further, when principals blame the teachers we feel helpless and attacked professionally as we are getting literally attacked and told not to write reports or address it or we face having to take the accountability for it regardless. Then we resign or are fired or forced to resign involuntary. I even know how to answer the question bc it was such a gray area as I was a new teacher and my school was so dirty the reports were just made up. I get it principals are busy but this -we need a fall guy mentality and teachers will take the fall is proving itself to not be a good idea. |
You can't be forced to resign.
|
When your work environment sucks people become understandably uncomfortable, people always seem to forget that teachers are humans and not just robots to teach little Timmy. |
You are incredibly naive if you believe this to be true. |

Interesting to see that RM, which is often praised as "a great school" is coming in at 52% in the "Not at all or somewhat safe", whereas Gaithersburg is much lower at 40%.
In my neighborhood, half is zoned to RM and the other half is zoned to Gaithersburg. People lose their minds about the Gaithersburg side being "bad" but the RM side is "great!" The HS overall average was 41%. |
I think it’s cause the bar is so low for high schools at this point that if there are no daily fights or copious amounts of drugs it’s considered a good school. |
Nope. You either resign willingly or get fired. Let's not pretend that if someone was asked to resign involuntarily, there wouldn't be another 500k lawsuit. It's not legal. |
