Why is there no talent training, recruitment and pipeline strategy for this field, on a national level? Trump needs to put one in place because air safety is critical.

Trump and Stephen Miller fired them. That's why.

The requirements are super tough. https://www.faa.gov/air-traffic-controller-qualifications

Then even if you meet the requirements, you have to relocate to Oklahoma City for training, then you have to relocate again for your on the job training for 2-3 years, and then you’re a full fledged ATC. But you still have to maintain the ongoing health requirements. I do agree that maybe our high schools and community colleges, and even 4 year colleges, should do a better job of promoting careers in air traffic control though.

Or maybe we should focus on education so that more kids would be equipped to undergo true training for such jobs.

Frankly this should be front page news. What happened to good American jobs being filled by American. The fact that FAA training happens in Oklahoma is even more amazing given where they rank nationally for education and seem to be trying to find the basement.

The FAA has had huge operations in Oklahoma for 50 years. There is and has been a thriving air-oriented community there. Just because it is in the middle ina non-DCUM approved area doesn't immediately render it unfit for human use.

Seriously. Maybe they should pay ATCs more. Why don't they set up training somewhere else in addition to Oklahoma?

They can make the job more desirable. Like H1Bs, it's BS to say Americans can't/won't do the job. It's a financial issue, not a supply issue.

We are getting ripped off on ATC!

285% Tariffs on foreign ATC, and native American ATC will spring up immediately!

Are you insinuating that people travel to Oklahoma for FAA training? On airplanes? Without any qualified ATC? Preposterous!

The pay/salary is missing from the advertisement. Interesting

DP. I don’t think it is just a non DCUM approved area. How many people, out of 100, with better or similar options, would voluntarily move to Oklahoma. Maybe 2-3.

This says $70k+ once you’re a permanent hire. https://www.faa.gov/jobs/career_fields/aviation_careers Not sure if that’s base salary or includes all the mandatory overtime. Also not sure how much they are paid during the training period - you have to be 30 and under to get accepted into ATC training school, so it’s really only a job for young people but probably wouldn’t be accessible if you were already married with kids.

They’d never set up a training facility outside OK because 1) the OK congressional delegation would never allow it, gotta protect the monopoly and 2) we aren’t investing in this country anymore anyway. You’ll take your H1B ATC and like it.

Increase pay, offer to pay off student loans if you make it through the 2-3 year training, incentivize universities to create pipelines, etc. it’s actually not that hard, we just don’t make this a priority. If you made 100k straight out of training, people would relocate to OK for a few years. People do it for Teach for America, rural medical programs, etc. You have to incentivize it.

+1 this is a good plan. This job is very stressful, but if you provide enough incentive, you might find more people willing to go into the field.
