I agree with those who said wait for MOB to select a dress, then MOG goes for it.

I'd also ask the bride if there are any colors that she prefers you wear -- or don't wear. I didn't care exactly what MOB/MOG wore. They knew the colors of the wedding were rose, and both were happy with a pastel dress that complimented (I think my mom was blue and my MIL was green).

Zoya’s Atelier in Falls Church has beautiful gowns for mother of the bride/groom. My friend bought hers there for her daughter’s wedding.

Zoya Altelier in falls church does custom high end for MOB/G. My mom got her dress there for my brother's wedding. it was not too expensive either. depending on budget you can spend like $3K-$5K

I found a beautiful bridesmaids dress and cut it to the length I wanted. I walked intoa bridal shop and saw this dress and said, that’s it. The sales lady told me it was a bridesmaids dress, and I said, not anymore.

Wedding at a vineyard. I would suggest not purchasing at a bridal shop. But, if the wedding dress and bridesmaids' dresses are very traditional, then go with Nieman's or Nordstrom's.

As far as prints--be sure and consider the pictures. Be sure you wear the dress and not vice versa. Time of day is also key.

And, as others have said, if you are groom's mother, wait until mother of the bride has chosen. If you are bride's mother, then be considerate and don't wait until the last minute to share with groom's mom.

I ordered lots of dresses from Nordstrom's but ended up returning all of them. I didn't find much in stock--but I wanted sleeves and am on the chunky side. I found a dress i loved at Neiman's--the salesclerk insisted I try it. But you have plenty of time.

Ha - good for you! I hate being pigeonholed into certain things and prefer to make what I like my own, regardless of who it's "meant" for.

I wear petite sizes and ordered directly from Alex Evenings website. I ordered multiple dresses/ sizes to try them on and was able to return them no problem. Good luck!
