Lithium ion batteries caused 1500 fires between 2014 and 2018.

Which is more dangerous here? Also, you probably have more batteries than extension cords in your home.

The CPSC also says they found "4,760 nonfatal incidents involving extension cords were in-scope, and occurred between 1980 and 2013" (https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2015/07/27/2015-18294/substantial-product-hazard-list-extension-cords). I am not sure how the 144 incidents per year in their database leads to an estimate of 3000 per year.

NP. I used to be a fed. I took a brief look. The source docs you guys are looking at are 10+ years old and from mixed time periods.

Also, it might be the case that fires and fire statistics are not coming from the same database as CPSC incident reports. If I was fascinated with tracking this down, I would first look into what agency or source is definitive for fires caused by widgets.

It looks like the statistics might be collected by a non-governmental organization which means they would be completely unreliable.

Which claims about 46,700 fires yearly from 2016-2019. Of those fires 9% are short circuits from defective or worn insulation on plugs and cords. Extension cords are said to dominate the "plug and cord" category. So that's 4203 fires from plugs and cords.

The report is an analysis of the NFIRS database maintained by FEMA.

I can't even call up the IRS and get the same answer twice! The Bureau of Labor Statistics is constantly revising their numbers and sometimes they are way off. The subprime mortgage crisis crept right past the SEC.
