This is the dumbest advice. Sure add in multiple unnecessary steps and 30+ minutes for an 80 year old. Just drive to the terminal and then go around the Maryland side if you think that’s better.

Can you actually read? Because Op literally said they were worried about the GW Parkway. How do you suggest you get to the terminal then? The proposed metro idea is actually a good one. You are rude.

Still stupid advice. Go around the MD side both ways if you really think that’s necessary. Done make Grandma wait 15+ minutes for a metro.

How you going to get from Maryland to DCA and avoid the GW Parkway? Have you even been to National? So please explain, since OP wants to avoid the Parkway, how to get to National since it’s between the Parkway and the Potomac?

You want Grandma to wait 15 min for the metro or hours if OP is stuck in traffic on the Parkway? If she’s so sensitive, maybe she shouldn’t be traveling at all. Also you need to look at a map.
You can avoid the away by using Route 1.

Beltway to 66 to 110 to Route 1, there is an exit just after Crystal City that goes straight to the airport. Interesting that you are so strident in your post, when apparently you haven't looked at a map.

Change her flight

All roads will be closed

Strong chance he institutes martial law that day

It’s going to be chaos.

You do realize there is an entire other side of the beltway that goes around MD and across the Wilson Bridge? Look at a map moron.

Much as I love Reagan, I’d try to change airports. Maybe IAD?
Anonymous
Just go through DC go around. Or have park in Aleandria and metro to Airport and back.

It will not be a big deal.
Anonymous
Reagan will be tough that day. Fly back another day if you can.

Nightmare-avoid! We have flown into DCA on the Fourth of July and couldn' t get back into Georgetown where we live. Switch dates or airports. Metros are diverted in one direction and certain stops are closed. Traffic everywhere.
Anonymous
Reagan is normally great to get in and out of but with recent crash and close calls it is white knuckle flying. BWI is my first choice these - usually has better fares for my destinations than Reagan.

Looks like odds are good the flight will end up cancelled.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2025/06/05/army-trump-birthday-parade-airport-closure/

"customers with flight reservations for the evening of June 14 should check the status of their flights directly with their airline"

Metro to her to help her with her bags.

Someone already suggested this early on in the thread and then other posters said it was a dumb idea. Not sure why, seems like a solution to me.

BUT now the news is saying DCA will be closed for SEVERAL hours that day, so OP better make sure the flight isn't cancelled.

My friend, I live in Alexandria. If the Parkway is closed or has bad traffic, so will Route 1 (actually it is likely to be worse bc of all the lights) and that includes the part in Crystal City as well as south. All roads that are parallel (the Parkway, Rt 1, 395, Quaker, Russell/Commonwealth/Mt Vernon into 22202), all of them will be jammed. One of the biggest concerns when all the noise about whether to move Cap One over to Potomac Yard.

You can literally do a search on YouTube or Tik Tok for bad traffic around DCA near Thanksgiving, Christmas and July 4. It ends up in the news a lot.
