Athens must do with kids 9-11 years old

We booked a tour of Athens that looked at the ruins through a mythology lens. My Percy Jackson loving kid adored it. Went to the Acropolis and Agora and some other sites.

What genders are your kids and what are their interests?

We have a long list- the plaka neighborhoods, rooftop dinner at Kuzina overlooking acropolis, the stadium, changing of the guards, botanical gardens, island day tour, etc Maybe americans coming to Greece from the Us feel a huge need to make it like disneyland (all of those who only mentioned going to the acropolis for example) we do slow
Tourism trying to maximize the experience not tick things of the list.

I’m not understanding the have a long list/not trying to tick things of of it concept.

Huh? Those of us who have been to Athens are probably in a better position than you are when you have never been. I did all of the things you list and some day trips outside the city as well. We also spent a week on Crete.

The fact is that Athens, outside of the acropolis and the acropolis museum, isn’t a great tourist city. It isn’t like London or Paris or Rome or Barcelona where there are nearly unlimited great tourist sites. You have to fly in and out of Athens, but otherwise your time in Greece is better spent elsewhere.

Athens is probably the exact opposite of a “slow travel city”. It just isn’t a great walking / strolling type place. There is very little greenery at all, there are cars everywhere and walking around is difficult. It is also quite dirty with a lot of graffiti and sketchy type places. The food is good, but you can get better food on the islands.

Would love to hear which tour you used! Starting to plan a trip and my 9yo Percy Jackson fan would love this.

I was going to plan 3 nights in Athens (we'd get in late arrivalday) and in addition to a tour like the above thought about a food tour geared toward kids on the second day. Does that sound about right? Any other suggestions for a half day?

This would be outside of the main beach season so rather than going to an island I was leaning towards renting a car and driving to Delphi (2 nights) and then the Peloponnese peninsula (likely Nafplio, 3 nights). Has anyone done something like this?

Why would you go to Greece and not go to the islands? That's the entire point of Greece.

As a non-American, I find this statement funny, but YES, please do stick to the islands so you’re not crowding up everywhere else too.
As for Athens, it’s not somewhere I’d spend a week but only staying a day is doing it a disservice. You’re not really giving it a chance. Just my opinion though.
