Our dc exurb is $45 |
Your simple question does not warrant my rant. It’s not you. It’s that I think about this every time someone asks about vet costs.
Sometimes vet costs seem high because we are used to strange financial schemes in human health. Human health: You pay hundreds or thousands into insurance. Your employer does the same. You get a test that costs $400, but after insurance, you pay $0-$20. Animal health: You pay $75, and it feels high. Or you get a $1,000 surgery bill, and it feels high. But you’re paying for more direct care, without a financial tool (and insurance bureaucracy). Actually, vet bills are awesome to see—it’s a window into what human health bills might be if we just paid directly. Human health bills are inflated, then reduced. |
This is an outsourced lab test, it won't be included with the exam.
We had a fecal/parasite test for our dog this month, and it was $90. |
Why would it be included? No, $75 is not crazy high.
I'm sorry - this is something I don't say in my public life. But people are such cheapskates when it comes to their animals. Yes, there should be systems to make things more affordable - we should have a PA level of vet care, like we have with humans; we should have vet nurses who can do more; etc. But come on - these are the furry creates who make every day of our lives better. Stop being a miser about them! |
How old is the cat? If an adult and using preventative then only necessary if there’s an issue |
I paid $85 for this in DC proper recently |
Yeah you say that until your cat somehow ends up with one. Then you would complain why vet didn’t insist doing one. |
+1 It's crazy to me that people complain about a $75 once a year medical test for a pet when they happily spend twice that on their hairstyle every couple months. |
Why should it be included with an annual examination??? I really want to know....
Indoor only cats SHOULD go to the vets yearly - rabies vaccination is required by law in many municipalities - including the State of Virginia. Heartworm prevention does not prevent coccidia or giardia, both of which are tested for on fecal examinations. So your dog could still have parasites. Additionally, no heartworm preventative is perfect - some dogs don't always take the meds every month ![]() Vets are NOT trying to fleece you....they are trying to give your pet a healthy life....don't want to run the test? Decline it. Don't complain about it here. |
Private equity driving up the cost of veterinary care (and the minimum earning that a vet is meant to make) will make pet ownership increasingly unaffordable. |
I have long hair on purpose so I can cut my own hair. Vet bills that cost over $100 is too much. |
For frame of reference, I also shop at Walmart and haven’t bought new clothes for myself in years. Not everyone is comfortable paying $1100 for a bill for their pet. Especially not during this volatile economy. |
