Three year old refuses short sleeves

OP - when he gets hot enough, he'll finally want to take his long sleeved shirt off and go topless. That's when you step in with a nice cool t-shirt! Problem solved.

I bought swim shirts at Target.

Because I'm the mom and I say so. Same goes with meals and other things. At 2yrs old, my child is not going to be leading me around by the nose. Establish authority early and it makes life much easier in the long run.

Wow. This is pretty extreme. Allowing your child to make simple decisions about what to wear (within reason) doesn't mean they're leading you around by the nose! Establishing authority on such a petty issue seems, well, petty. Hard to equate a t-shirt to meals. I say let him wear the shirt that makes him happy. It's a freakin' shirt! On something as personal and intimate as clothing, the kid should have some say.

When I go through this with DS I put him in a light weight, long sleeved, dress shirt. I think I got them at Old Navy.

I am the pp who was the 2nd or 3rd to respond. Yesterday when I got home, DS was in shorts and a long sleeved shirt so that was a little progress! But I tried to get him to put on his new sandals to go to the park and he refused. When it was time for bed, I showed him some new pajamas that I got that were shortsleeved and he was all excited until he put them on and then immediately started crying and yanking on the sleeves until I took them off! And for the pp who said they would just get hot and eventually go topless, my son doesn't seem to be affected by the heat at all. He may be sweating and red-faced, but it doesn't seem to bother him. It just looks so uncomfortable to me!

This is one of those areas for me with my 3 y/o that I go with the natural consequences approach. You don't want to wear your coat and it's 30 degrees outside? Okay, fine, you will get cold. Then you'll want to put on your coat. My child is very determined so some things he needs to learn on his own and as long as it's not a major health/safety issue, I let him learn by making his own choices. Now if it were 20 below, I'd put his coat on him and let him fuss. I'm with the poster who said you've got to choose your battles.

My son balked at the short sleeves, too. So in the morning I put on the short sleved shirt, then immediately put on his favorite sweatshirt. I wait until he's engaged in some fun activity, then slip off the sweatshirt. I think maybe he really is cold in the morning, but warms up later.

OP here...while I absolutely agree that it's important to pick your battles and I have no issue letting DS pick out his own clothes, etc, I'm going back and forth deciding whether or not I should force the T-shirt/shorts issue. My experience with DS is that no matter how hot he is, he won't wear a T-shirt and it's going to be VERY hot and humid this summer. We spend almost every day outside. He needs to be appropriately dressed. On the other hand, I don't think it's the typical three year old power struggle issue, I really think he's freaked out about bare arms and legs (for whatever reason) and I don't want to cause him major distress.

btw 9:59, it's great progress that he's wearing shorts. My advice is to just let him get used to the shorts for a while and wait a little bit to try t-shirts again. Fortunately it's not so hot and humid outside yet.
