How to help an elderly parent feel better when they’re having a hard time adjusting to their new reality?

FYI that you have to be careful with anti anxiety and antidepressant meds if someone has detention, Parkinson’s, or Alzheimer’s. It can be a dangerous mix and make things even worse. Make sure to work closely with specialists before letting a GP prescribe anything if they have a neurological issue.

It ends up being a compromise. You are right, but often you take some risks because at least they can enjoy quality of life. A lot of what is prescribed carries major risks for the elderly. but O have yet to meet anyone in a support group who didn't feel it was worth it.

PP here and agree there are tradeoffs. There are just docs out there who don’t seem aware enough of the potential dangers to even have the conversation.

Defenitely talk to her dr about depression. My mom takes a low dose of Paxil, it helps some for her although I think she may need a higher dose (will discuss next dr visit).

But I understand your concern. I have a hard time getting Mom outside sometimes! She always feels better once actually out. It can frustrate me sometimes, because she was such an active person when younger-never a tv watcher.
