Teachers/Parents - Would your judge my child’s coat? (Faded sleeve and back but name brand)

Anonymous

Most kids don't even come to school dressed for the weather. The teacher notices the kids without coats. The kids who have coats all have varying degrees of dirt or wear on them.

You and husband are INSANE.

Wow.

Just imagine this OP and husband trying to keep up with the Jones's and not allowing their kids to play with other kids who don't look exactly like them (they could have dirty coats!).

I am a teacher and I would not even notice. I do, however, have a student in my class wearing a high end coat. My colleague showed me online what it cost--about 1K. A thousand dollars on a coat for a 6 year old. I absolutely judge that. I cannot take her parents seriously. It's ridiculous.

Then you're as stupid as the OP. I bought my baby a Baby Dior outfit I found in a thrift store one day. $8. When I was a kid, a wealthy great-aunt would shower me with expensive gifts that my parents would never have bought for me, even if they had the money.

So stop judging when you don't have all the details.

What do you care what other people think?

Been a teacher for thirteen years. Would never cross my mind.

Thanks PPs! Op here. We are an AA family so it’s little things that make me take a second and consider things like this. I want to ensure people treat my son no differently than other kids and the majority of his teachers are Caucasian. Appearance being extremely important to my husband based on his experiences growing up.

This except after three years, I stopped wasting money on coats. He doesn’t even have one this year. He was at recess in shorts yesterday. I draw the line at snow. If he’s sledding, he needs to wear gloves and a coat.

Just wanted to say I’m sorry that you have to think like this. I would not even give it a second thought.

I only care that you child has a coat AND it has their name on it. If you have those two things, you get an A++++ in my book.

OP and DH are both a little goofy to be thinking about this.

Don’t worry about it. We can afford to buy new but I buy second hand on purpose. I buy nice brands because they are warmer, more waterproof and fit better. I don’t pay any attention to what other kids are wearing. When mine was really little I bought a new Patagonia winter coat. It looked second and within a week of wear. Lesson learned.

Teacher here. The only thing I care about is that your kid actually has a coat.

Can someone please explain to me what qualifies as a “name brand” coat for a 1st grader?
Anonymous
I have no idea what coat my elementary kids’ friends wear. My 5th grader insists on only wearing a hoodie on all but the coldest days.
I assume people judge me for that more than my 2nd grader who is the 4th owner of a hand me down Lands End coat that is showing its age. We live in an affluent NoVa neighborhood and I have relatives who work at North Face and Helly Hansen and can get us pricey ski gear at a steep discount. My kids still wear hand me downs from neighbors- and we hand down what we buy new or is still wearable.
