Consider how miserably hot July and August are and how little you can actually be outside for a lot of the day during those months. Now add 2 weeks off in late September, 2 weeks in April for spring break and a 3 week break in December/January. Such a no brainer for me. So many more opportunities to enjoy time off vs 8+ weeks in 103 degree heat. I think it will be very popular with many families and staff. |
It also lets you spread out childcare costs. I’d love a year round schedule and would likely move and quit my APS job for Loudon if this happens. |
You cannot be serious. That’s when you go to the pool, the beach, vacation, etc. |
Childcare for what age? Are you talking about teachers than need to find childcare for their own children? Or parents of school children needing to find childcare for the times school is not in session? Won't it actually be difficult to find reliable childcare for more frequent, shorter terms, than to just find one consistent caregiver/daycare for a longer stretch-that is also consistent with other local district's schedule? |
Mine will no longer be a student by then, but I like those end dates.
It's never made sense to me why our kids go so long. For reference, my nieces in CA started school 08/12/2024 and get out 05/22 or 05/23/2025. They started only a week and a half before, but they get out 3 weeks earlier! And their school days are much shorter as well. I believe they start (in high school) at 8:30 and get out of school at 2:45. My sister's kids in AZ started Aug 7 and will get out on May 22. School starts at 9 and gets out at 3:30. The kids can come from 8:30-9 for free breakfast for all, too. Going 9:30 to 4:20 is such a long day and I hardly see my HS kid. She's always still asleep or just getting up when I leave for work, so at the most I see her for 15 minutes before school. I get home at around 6 and she doesn't get home from after school sports/activities until 7 or 8 or later if it's a game night. Then it's HW, studying, shower, and dinner... it's all a blur. I stayed with my sister in AZ recently while on a work trip and it was so calm after school, and they always got to eat as a family because sports and activities were all finished by 7 pm if not earlier. |
We go long because we build in a lot of denominational holidays that other school districts around the country don’t. We have to add in days for the Jewish holidays, Muslim, and Hindu holidays in our calendar. This stretches us further into the year to hit the required seat hours. |
As I’ve repeatedly said, there is still a 5-6 week summer break. You can do all of that then AND enjoy time off throughout the year in nicer months in more restful chunks of time with the balanced year round calendar. |
5-6 weeks is not much time for HS kids to work or complete an internship or residential academic program. Never mind fun things like summer swim team. HS fall sports & marching band start practice 3-4 weeks before school begins. So I guess all of those kids get 1-2 weeks of summer before that starts? |
I agree. |
If you lived or spent enough time in LC you’d understand this and why. LC loves to accommodate everyone and everything. Creating a mediocre education at best! |
What you just described would be a fully packed summer whether it was 6 weeks or 8. You’re being ridiculous. |
When we moved to this area, summer break was 10 weeks. It’s been slowly eroded to be shorter & shorter. What I’m describing is a typical summer for a HS kid in this area (of course one kid isn’t doing all of that, but one kid doing job or internship or summer class plus summer swim plus fall sport training is normal & fits in an 8-10 week summer just fine). |
It sounds lovely if your kids are little and you don’t work so you can travel. It sounds like hell to everyone else. Working parents need to find camp in the winter instead of the summer. Forget the outdoor options now. Older kids don’t get to go away to be camp counselors, for pre college programs or for internships anymore. |
Only 27% of people are in favor of the alternative calendar so hopefully this gets put to rest. |
We also go long because on addition to the needed teacher work days, we have a bunch of teacher training days. At least from my perspective as an experienced teacher who gets high ratings, there are too many of those. It often feels like we are getting trained on things because there is a training day, and not because the training is critical to our teaching that time. |
