How do you talk about your absent ex with your children?

Their dad turned out to be a deadbeat, he walked out and had little interest in them. I had full custody. I talked about our happy memories, reminisced with pictures from their early childhood when he was still involved and in the family.
They made up their own minds about him and decided he wasn’t acting like a dad should and therefore wasn’t their dad.
