You'll never guess what other award is available to people who score a 4 on an AP test. Hint: it's available outside of MCPS and Maryland too! |

Seal of Biliteracy is primarily intended for English Language Learners to get credit for knowing their native language and also learning school English.
Native English speakers use the regular AP/IB World Language tests and don't need a specific test to validate their native language skill. https://sealofbiliteracy.org/faq |
This isn’t correct. It’s for native or non-native English speakers. |
| When/where/how do kids take the Maryland High School Assessment in English? |
| My child is taking it because the neighbors kid will definitely not be able to pass it. There really isn't any other reason. It's odd how people think it's to get I to college or something? There's more to life than getting into college. Spite is a very valid reason for doing things. I'm sure there are other reasons as well. |
| It’s a really nice medal to wear at graduation! Due to starting Spanish 1 in 9th grade, due to a variety of reasons, my DD took the Avant STAMP test at school either at the end of junior year or the beginning of senior year. One of the school proctors tried to tell her she was entering the wrong testing room (because she didn’t look Hispanic). Anyway, she aced the test and earned a 5 in AP Spanish language at the end of senior year. |
I think you can take a non-AP/IB exam and get it too, though I'm not a hater - just pointing that out. |

Reviving this old thread with a question...
How does that work for graduation if kid is taking AP Spanish senior year and scores won't be back yet? School is saying not to take the Biliteracy exam since AP exam covers it. |
| They offer the tests in December and late January/early February every year. The trick is getting on the WL resource teachers email list to know about it. |
If you want the medal for graduation, take the language test. You will not have it if you wait until May of Sr year to take the AP exam. Language placement in college is a separate concern. |
