Do you get annoyed by the out of touch rich people posts?

No, because I was once a struggling grad student.

Now I'm the one with millions in my portfolio, in my 40s.

If you're too insecure to understand that time, career or investment decisions matter in these discussions... that's a you problem.

Op here - get lost!

You're confirming that you're immature and jealous for no reason.

I've been on DCUM for years. People who can barely get by on 400K a year (15 years ago, it was 250K a year!) are sure annoying!
But all you need to do is ignore them. Or explain, if you want to be helpful.

The people who respond to direct questions such as "how much do you make/have?" are not annoying. They're just answering. if you don't like their answer... well, what can I say. You're not ready for internet message boards

+1, OP’s response confirms above.

This board skews heavily UMC and above so people with money and people with lots of money.

You can go read Reddit if you want a message board with lower income people.

400K is very rich.

or...

You are disillusioned if you think 400K brings you any security.

+1. Can vouch for this! We actually make a little less than this. If I ever post how comfortable we are, I get told we are absolutely paupers, probably working poor. And if I ever say there is anything we can’t afford, I get told I’m out of touch and clueless. This income range cannot win. But that’s DCUM in a nutshell.

How many millions should I leave my kid?

I only make 900k, why do I feel so poor?

etc etc

Give me a break. Try living on a normal income and you would see how obnoxious all this stuff is.

No because they get to post and ask questions too. Not obnoxious at all. Don't read if does not apply to you. But yes rich people have questions too. You do not own DCUM.

OP, the reason I like this forum for investing/financial advice is because it skews so UMC/wealthy. I’m not even in the D.C. area, but I’m grateful DCUM exists because I haven’t found a similar anonymous forum for this demographic in my area. I ignore the posts that don’t apply to me. You are free to do the same.

I also like this forum because it skews UMC/wealthy. Because there aren't so many UMC/wealthy people in this world, it can be hard to hear their point of view.

I used to get annoyed. Then I made my millions and understand that people struggle in different ways for different reasons regardless of their economic status.

Sure -- it is eye roll-inducing when wealthy people are asking how much to leave their kids. From your perspective it's not a real problem. But to them it is. It's unlikely they're being jerks. They probably have their own very human fears and desires (and legit trauma) and it's manifesting in decision paralysis.

And of course they're going to say their piece on an anonymous forum. In-person scoffs from peers, friends, and family are more hurtful than random folks on DCUM berating you for being 'out of touch'.

Dude -- people are human. Just chill out and accept that what you deem irrational may seem very rational to someone else. And vice versa. I'm sure you financial concerns that seem legit to you. But ask a wealthy person and they'll tell you to stop stressing and go enjoy life.

I make that in DC and I'm doing great.

There was one post from a SAHM looking to re-enter the workforce whose spouse made $1mil a year, so she “didn’t need to make that much, only $200k or so.”

Ridiculous

I think they’re hilarious. Especially the one claiming it’s impossible to live of [multiple times my income] without family help.

When I started reading DCUM I mentally dubbed it the “rich people be weird” forum.

The person that asked if 10million is enough to retire - uh, yeah. lol

Anonymous wrote:No. I get annoyed by someone telling me I'm out of touch and privileged and rich on my measly 150k income.

I got rich on 1/4 of that by investing. Took me only 5 years. This makes me think it's a choice and that's how the arguments start. Your income makes it easy to get to half a million. After that there's no stopping the money growth.

Let’s remember that while there are UMC people on DCUM, the amount of people posting about their millions is skewed by people who are flat-out lying (my opinion is this is a large majority) and repeat posters. The truly wealthy don’t need to come to DCUM for advice.

It's the price you pay for an anonymous forum with no account features and no-account people.

If you don't read the thread, they won't hurt you (except for the all caps title posts).

Of you tried living on a higher income, you wouldn't be poor. Do it.
