At what grade do you care about your kids SOL score?

Like a few others, I care about his 6th grade math SOL. He needs pass advanced to participate in Algebra 1 H next year.

Some families will be paying attention every year because their kids are Principal Placed in LLIV or in Advanced Math because SOL scores are a part of how Principals decide to place in the LLIV class and are part of determining math placement after 3rd grade.

What happens if you're opt-out of sols ?

As a HS teacher with kids in ES, MS, and HS: the only one where scores kind of matter is 6th grade math. Other than that, I just hope for passing!

Do previous year SOL scores matter if we want to apply for LIV AAP?

I think it reflects more on the teacher and school than the child. Ive never cared. In fact I wish the teachers would stop putting pressure on the kids and telling them its so important. Its not, and that doesn’t help anyway.

Never. I never even looked at their scores. They're in college now so I guess they passed

I cared a bit in elementary school because it was a gauge of their general test-taking skills and if they are learning the very basics that they should be. And, yes, the 6th grade one (7th grade math SOL) is important for taking Algebra in 7th.

Now that my kids are in middle school and high school I don't care at all, because they are so far beyond the skills tested at their grade level, considering the honor/AP/DE classes they are taking.

Opting out of SOLs could negativly impact LLIV placement and Algebra 1 placement in 7th grade but I don't know that definitively. I doubt anyone has a definitive answer.

Algebra 1 H in 7th grade requres passing the IAAT in the 91st percentile AND passing advanced on the 7th grade SOL. I would assume that a student who opts out of the SOL might not be eligible for Algebra 1 H in 7th grade. There are anecodtal stories regarding kids being placed in Algebra 1 H at some MS without hitting both bench marks but those stories come out of schools with a smaller contingent of kids who meet the threshold and the MS needs more bodies to have multiple Algebra 1 H sections between the 7th and 8th grades. The MS Center schools are not likely to allow a student who has meet both bench marks.

Principal placement for LLIV is a school by school decision. Most schools seem to use SOL, iReady, grades, and Teacher recommendations. Opting out of the SOLs removes one of the commonly used factors for inclusion so I would say that it is a risk to do if you want your child Principal Placed.
