"Modern Farmhouse" look is so boring and already looks dated

I don't think people who start these kinds of threads understand what goes into building a custom home. The time, expense, and headaches are significant. There is a reason that builders have a few models to choose from and the models are things that a lot of potential customers will like. It's not rocket science. Who cares what kind of house other people live in?

Mixed in an existing neighborhood, though, they look like ghost ships. It's not a warm, inviting look but rather cold and imposing. PP, you don't understand why people would care about the character of their neighborhood?

I hate most of them. There are a lot of trends I can get behind but this one isn’t it. Major Beetlejuice house vibes!

This. An actual old farmhouse made with wood siding and windows would look great painted white with black windows.

It takes so much money to make them look unique, done with decor

Yes, and that does nothing for the exterior.

If people care that much, they can move somewhere with an HOA, or somewhere with historic preservation protections, or somewhere without neighbors in sight. I don't think one kind of house is superior to another in neighborhoods where they just let you build anything.

I say this as someone who lives in a cookie cutter brick colonial.

I love colonials. Those never go out of style.

Colonials are ugly and dated. I can’t believe you like them.

DP but I will never tire of a traditional center hall brick colonial. (Not talking about the 1980s brick in front, siding on the rest style). But the actual ~1920s-30s era (well maintained) colonials will forever be my favorite.

Alas I do not live in one.

I disagree, while it's not my preference, it can look really nice with color accents in decor or landscaping. That could apply to any style of home but farmhouse is good base palette where accents can shine on white/black. It's a very classic and safe choice. The op's premise bothers me because it is a common lament of many to decry one style by comparing the cheaper ends of it to the highest ends of the styles they prefer.

Many people like white. It has mass appeal. Remember the all-white kitchen trend?

I like white too (we have white hardie on our renovated/expanded 1930s home), but I’m so glad we didn’t go with the black window trim. I had a feeling it would look really dated to the 2020s and it was a little too modern for our style of home.

So I think you can still go white without copy/pasting the current modern farmhouse trend.

It’s hard to keep up with home maintenance and repair, so I’m proud even of our new roof and our new hot water heater. I’m proud of our new windows and window treatments. We’ve barely done any decor updates, and we really need new carpets and flooring. I look forward to be able to do that.

If your dream was to own a home and now you do, congratulations, and great job on all the work and savings and patience it takes to maintain your home. You are living not only your own dream, but the dream of many people who might never achieve it.

Oh c’mon we’re not crapping on little 3 BR/2BA ramblers that someone scrounged up a downpayment for with blood, sweat, and tears.

Most of these houses are $2-3M +. People at that price point have options. Yes it’s an accomplishment to own those homes, but they could have picked a different style. Obviously they like it enough to drop a lot of money on it, so good for them, but the rest of us aren’t horrible for disliking an affluent trend that is overdone.

Also lend themselves to tasteful expansion if desired.

No because the windows aren’t wood.

You can paint things that aren't wood.

It is possible to paint vinyl. It may lead to headaches, but if the black is already causing a headache, then it's not much worse.
