Convince me travel is always worth it!

I mean - nobody can convince you - it's such a personal decision.

Go if you want to get out of town and don't go if you're happy relaxing at home. Why do you feel like you need to be convinced to travel over the summer? I like to go away but it's certainly not to make memories. Hell, I can make memories anywhere. I go away to specific destinations whether to explore or relax. I happen to have kids and would go nuts staying home all summer - it's not enough for us to just do pool as fun. It's a personal choice. I happen to enjoy staying home for winter break however and not doing anything for most of the 10/14 days off school. That time of the year, for us, it's more fun to be lazy, relax, catch up on sleep, etc. It's not like we can't make memories at home so we do.

Go somewhere you and your family will genuinely enjoy. Don't force "making memories" or destinations that you're not interested in simple because it's somewhere you "need" to see.

We are kind of homebodies but choose vacations that will be easy and fun even if they're not "exciting" and I never regret the trip.

I understand wanting to make memories. My child is 9 and I feel like I only have so many more trips before she doesn’t want to hang out with us anymore!!
For what it’s worth-I remember all of my family trips growing up and look back on them very fondly.

I agree don't put pressure on yourself and your family to "make memories." Look for local things you can do. Go cherry picking and make a pie. Find a new park to explore. Go kayaking or rafting or tubing for a day.

You're right to feel this way. By mid-teens, they really don't want to be on vacation with their parents anymore. Seize the day!

OP, I'm not going to convince you. You're very different from me. I would never spend on a renovation if it took money away from travel. We are just two different people.

It’s definitely not always worth it.

Shockingly, people who don’t have a lot of money go on trips and make memories. Book a state park close to a beach and roast some marshmallows or get a KOA cabin somewhere interesting or go on a road trip to someplace beautiful like Tennessee or Kentucky where you can stay at a lake, etc.

I'm a bit puzzled by these weird meme about making memories. It's just one summer you're skipping a big trip. The time flies. Soon it'll be next summer.

Assuming you're in DC, you can do a couple long day trips to the Delaware shore. We did that a few times when I was a kid and guess what, I remember those just as well as I remember when we did our standard two weeks on Cape Cod every summer.

It’s not always worth it. My kids usually don’t even like to travel.

Be in the moment. Now is all that counts. If you are doing something now, be present, don't think about other stuff.

That's how you enjoy things.

You can make memories without spending a lot of money.
