Is travel to Seoul worth it?

Food plus it has some cool historical sites. The city has its own “Great Wall” of sorts and a palace or two. There are definitely things to see.

Enjoy your trip, OP! I think adding Tokyo more than makes the time and effort worthwhile.

How is Tokyo really any different than Seoul? Serious question.

The same way NYC is not really any different from London.
Pretty much the same if you've never been to that side of the world.

The history and geography are different. The people and culture are different. The language and food are different. The similarities are they both eat rice and have tall buildings I guess?

We just did that trip Seoul and Tokyo and Seoul was a lot more fun and interesting than Tokyo.

I've been to both, but you didn't answer the question.

PP here. I'm Korean American. Never been to either Seoul or Tokyo.

I'm well aware of the cultural and food differences, and their history is actually quite tied together, at least the last 150 years.

But, if you look at some of their architecture, it's quite similar. I don't envision Tokyo to be that different from Seoul: lots of tall buildings with neon lights, with lots of pedestrians. They are at least cleaner than NYC from what I can tell.

If anyone has been to both, I'd love to hear what you found to be different between the two.

PP here. It sounded like OP was extending the vacation to include Tokyo, which they expressed interest in. So now instead of flying the whole way there for 1 week in Seoul at a conference (not worth it), they are including a second week in Tokyo (worth it).

Haven’t been to Tokyo, but Seoul is great. Food, as mentioned is fantastic, lots of history, there is hiking close to the city and the city is just a lot of fun and so safe.

My flight to Seoul was on Korean Air, in Economy. I think it might have had an inch or two more legroom than a United plane. For a 14 hour flight it wasn’t too bad. Jet lag wasn’t an issue going to Korea. We landed late afternoon, got dinner, went to bed and were good the next day. Coming home was another story. Landed at Dulles mid morning and took a couple days to recover.

If you want great Korean food, without the long flight, check out Ellicot City.

The answer is, it's not that different, in the same way that NYC and London are not that different.

If you’ve been to Seoul, is it worth the travel time and cost?
I might be more excited if it was in Tokyo, although I haven’t been there before either.

Work is sending you to a conference, but you have to pay the airfare?

Some professionals have to pay for their own conference travel.

Could you please share your thoughts on why? I know parts of Tokyo like the back of my hand but have never been to Seoul and would LOVE to see it! TIA
