New York University
Cornell University (NY)
Brown University (RI)

Notice no Columbia here.

I don't know anyone who dreams about living in Michigan or Ithaca but plenty dreaming of Columbia and NYC.

Columbia won't have trouble filling its class. Every declination to attend is another student's dream come true.

Maybe.

Maybe not.

Those kids have made that university degree almost worthless and its graduates unemployable.

The parents deserve a refund.

Most of it is wishful thinking of biased heads, not reality. Columbia and NYC would stay as desirable, probably more after free publicity.

No $hit, we have NEU booster and now Columbia/NYC booster. Why is it hard to believe people despise the place?

You don't get it. These colleges don't need boosters. They are established and in demand.

Mediocre schools need boosting.

Even though Princeton Review didn't ask me, I'll tell them my list as a parent:

Princeton
Harvard
Stanford
Georgetown School of Foreign Service
Claremont McKenna College
Middlebury College
Williams College
Northwestern
Any of the 3 main service academies (USMA, USNA, & USAFA)
Davidson College
Amherst College
Duke
U Penn-Wharton
Dartmouth
Rice
Notre Dame
USC-film/acting/screenwriting
Almost any state flagship honors college
maybe SMU
and about a dozen others.

(Is that ten yet ? If not, I have more.)

Same. Never understood. Its a good university and I'm sure Michigan is a fun state to live in. But, when you are a teen dreaming why did this show up? over like Berkeley.

Trying to understand not trying to disparage Michigan.

Columbia is in Manhattan NYC, the land of Ellis Island. From the beginning, it was set up to educate the locals who were more immigrants than established WASPs. Some 200 years later, diversity is in its blood. It's mostly diverse whites from my visits. It's nothing like what I see on TV in recent days.

So, Columbia may not for everyone. If your kid is a grinder who dream of being part of the established in the US, go to Harvard, Yale, Princeton. If your kid is a grinder who also like to have fun, there's no place like NYC.

You are projecting from a small universe.

I know not one kid who wanted to go to a large state school.

DP- It is you that might be projecting from a small universe. I know not one kid that wanted to attend a SLAC or Ivy.

Ann Arbor is a safe, fun place to live for four years. The whole town revolves around the school. It is respectable academically (and very strong for many grad programs). If you have an interest, they likely have work going on in that area. The football culture is contagious (and I say this as someone who is not into sports). Just a great place to finish growing into an adult.

It I was not claiming that my circle represents the majority.

Just trying to encourage you to put your head up and look outside your bubble.

The only entry that seemed out of place to me was NYU. Sure' it's fine if you want to study acting but not exactly the same league as the others.
