I was not successful. I would guess it is a case by case basis and doesn’t hurt to ask. I did not take it up the line to the principal.

Do you know what the cut score was and how close your child was to it? I’m anxiously awaiting results over here too. Also did you get your child’s full schedule in mid-May?

You’re anxiously awaiting? Cut scores and retakes? I would advise an entirely new approach to high school.

Unfortunately, math dictates the other classes students can take so it is important. What approach would you advise?

Kids whose parents need to engineer them into a math class shouldn't be in that math class. Your kid will be placed where they're supposed to be placed and their schedule will be what's best for them. You're out of your lane if you are anxious about it.

No scores from the tests only what class they were being placed in based on the math and foreign language placement test. The class schedule with the time/teachers/class rooms etc. was in August either during orientation or right before.

My child placed into Algebra 1 and had to get a high A (95+) in Algebra 1 in 9th grade, and then they were eligible to take a placement test that evaluated their mastery of Algebra 1 around April of 9th grade. They had to score high enough on that placement test to be offered the opportunity to take the 5 week summer school geometry offered at the school. Then had to pass that summer course with a certain grade in order to take Algebra 2 their 10th grade. This was the only option the school allowed. In the end it worked out. But if my kid hadn’t been a strong math student that already covered most, but not all, the material in 8th grade and if they didn’t have the motivation to get a high A, it would not have worked out.

This didn't work out for my freshman and its a tough pill to swallow. I also do not like that there are essentially no other ways to get ahead so do be sure you and your child are aware going in.

SJC seems to have a lot going for it, but this placement scheme is insane for the modern college admissions landscape.

It’s not about “engineering them.” It’s about playing the long game and understanding how one selection drives or limits others. Fortunately, we each get to manage our own mental health.

It depends on what your school offers. Multi-variable Calc, Linear Algebra, and AP Statistics are common options.

Pp again, some students also take AP Calc AB in 11th and BC in 12th. It’s not really set up to be a sequence that way, and there will be repetition/overlap, but it will help really cement the concepts.

My daughter placed in Algebra 2 as a Freshman. Most kids take Calc AB Junior year then Calc BC senior year. Maybe some do AP Stats senior year. A very small percentage take MV or whatever comes after Calc BC.

Is there a straight Geometry option or just the algebra1/geometry honors course?
Anonymous
Just the Algebra 1/Geo honors. Straight Geo non honors sophomore year if you don’t get into the summer class.
