charging rent for young adults

If they don't want to go to college, better learn some trade or skill during that time, instead of doing random low skill jobs. That would serve them better in long term.

Biggest issue with not going to college is ending up with friends without dedication, drive and ambition.

How much rent? Nothing.

I would pay for anything they needed - phone, insurance, car, food, utilities, internet, clothes, socializing etc.

I would definitely have rules around they helping out at home, behavior at home, and what would be a reasonable time to be back home etc. But, other than that? I would help them figure out what they want to do next in terms of having a career or further education. I would support my kid so that eventually he has a well paying career and can afford to marry, have a family, pay for the kid's college education, retire comfortably etc.

If you are going to cut their legs off at their knees, what is their future look like? Support them.

BUT, if you have a generally a deadweight kid who has not excelled in school, I would do exactly what you are doing.

Agree. Plumbers, electricians, auto mechanics, landscapers etc - all good professions that pay good money.

They also lose out on having a college cohort or network that can be supportive and spark career ideas in them. The people they will hang out outside of college are going to be other clueless people who won't figure out how to seek out new opportunities.

Elitist? Yes. Crap? No. This whole thread seems to be about someone who is not the typical DCUMer.

This may all be true but doesn’t help OP.

OP here. It’s more the latter. He’s is very difficult to live with. He thinks college is useless and just wants to work and make money. But he has no skills and is not particularly personable. He works PT now but saves no money. He is not interested in trade school. He has said he wants to get into the cannabis or psychedelics industry. I told him to go to college and get a degree in business and neuroscience or chemistry! He has acceptances from several schools but finds something wrong with each one.

Yikes. You should definitely charge him rent. How much would it cost him to get an apartment in your area? He needs a healthy dose of realism.

My son is doing an apprenticeship instead of attending college. I'm not charging him anything for rent. He must pay his car insurance (he saved up his money and bought a 2k car, so he has no car note), phone bill, and whatever personal things he wants.
