I don't feel well but productivity culture is making me feel guilty for taking afternoon off

We're an inattentive ADHD family. We accepted a long time ago that "productive" means something different to different people. Better to focus on a small amount of quality work than wave through a large amount of work. Of course, you need to choose your career and workplace wisely for that.

And REST YOUR BACK. Otherwise you'll be in worse shape and be even less productive later.
Make an appointment with a doctor. Figure out how to treat it. Back injuries can linger for years if not treated correctly.

What's new is people never calling out sick due to the advent of remote work and powering through even when their bodies are crying out for rest.

DP. People call out sick all the time at my fully remote workplace. No big deal. Is “productivity culture” something that GenZ made up to whine about on TikTok?

Np it is getting tiresome these generational put downs. You know very well that people have been expected to put work over family for years. At least in the past generations the workers on some companies were rewarded with their sacriface. Now there is zero loyalty.

Ask yourself this on your deathbed are you going to regret missing work or loved ones?

Btw I am gen x

Lately? Not really. I thought everyone was quiet quitting. Or at least focusing on work-life balance. If you’re not doing that and getting zero loyalty in return, then maybe it’s time to look for a new job.

I dunno, I'm sick with a stomach bug but since I'm remote I am going to keep working (with frequent bathroom breaks). I have little kids and can't afford to blow a sick day every time I'm under the weather, because I try to be good and take off when THEY are sick to avoid being that remote worker without childcare. Is this just working parent culture?

Take the time you need. Anybody flexing about working all the time is a useless dork that will be on their death bed realizing how dumb “productivity culture” is.

PP here and yes, that is different.

I think you’re asking if you need to take the day off because you’re having a tough time is an easy question to answer : Yes.

Be sure to turn the signal off on your phone and get some sleep.

Sometimes its helpful to think about what is actually going to happen if you don't attend the meeting or reschedule it? For most meetings I have the answer is nothing. And if someone reschedules on me I don't think twice about it. I have a small number of important meetings scheduled with higher ups that would be very difficult to reschedule. Those I would consider whether I could just power through.
