Strict new EPA rules would force coal-fired power plants to capture emissions or shut down

This rule also impacts new natural gas facilities. This will probably get overturned by the courts. However, it is concerning to me because most renewables do not have the capability to adjust production during peak demand periods. Coal and natural gas produced 59% of electricity in the US last year. Shutting down almost all coal power plants by 2039 only provides 15 years to replace 16% of current electricity generation capacity and the inflation reduction act is providing incentives that will create more demand for electricity. It will not be feasible to use battery storage to compensate for this lack of variable generation capacity from renewables within the next 15 years. I wish the Biden Admin took a less aggressive approach on EPA regs because nothing will be accomplished if the rules get overturned by SCOTUS.

Without pressure, nothing will change.
16 years is tight, but we need some teeth for these changes to happen.

Coal plants poison the communities around them, beyond just causing greenhouse gas.

Oh well by all means let us just hope and pray that Republicans discover that they also live on a dying planet. I don’t know if they imagine that they’ll be dead when the worst hits or that they’ll get to take a rocket to Mars or something, but it’s been 50 years of trying and one group of low intelligence people keep blocking it.

You think these changes do anything with regards to global warming? Using solar and wind power actually increases CO2 emissions, because the coal and gas backup power emit more if they are operating in a powerup/powerdown state rather than continuous power.
Leaving that aside, China and India are more emissions than US and Europe combined, and the rest of the world is more as well, and those parts are increasing emissions. You need a 90% cut to deal with global warming, so reducing the US's 15% will change global warming from 3C to 2.9C.

"Electricity prices will necessarily skyrocket"
Yet Democrats pretend that inflation isn't from higher energy costs created by Democrats.
They blame Trump/Covid/and lots of other factors.

Nihilist are tedious.
Here’s the deal… we might not be the biggest polluter, but if we don’t change, no one will.

Nearly everything Biden is proposing or working on will actually increase inflation and the cost of living for most Americans....

Student debt relief.... (It is not forgiveness.... it is forcing those who don't own the debt to pay the debt)
EPA rules
End Trump era tax cuts
Tax credits for EVs
Hiking fees for drilling on federal land

I'm sure there are more.... these are off the top of my head.

The Federal government should just double or tripple electricity and natural gas taxes, so that it becomes unaffordable for most Americans to heat and cool gigantic McMansions in the suburbs. We are using way too many fossil fuels to support these large homes that house so few people.

This but unironically. Being able to just throw cheap energy at problems leads to terrible solutions like the aforementioned monstrosities. You can design a terrible building with no vernacular roots if you throw enough energy at it.

Why can’t we just import energy from Russia?

Look no further than Old Town Alexandria.

Nice to see that DCUM thinks we don’t have to worry about climate change anymore.

Natural gas needs to be banned. Gas stoves, water heaters, and especially power-plants must not be allowed.

It is not climate change.

It’s a climate crisis now.
