What do you have against immigrants? They’ve always been integral to this country’s success. At least they’re having kids. Or are you racist and think they’re the wrong ones to be having kids? |
Feel free to call me racist, yes they are the wrong ones to be having kids, they have deep patriarchal society’s still, lower education, lower value about education, in general poor health, eyesight, teeth and l are black holes of need for decades. What they contribute does not offset what they take. |
It’s bad for our country but to be expected. No healthcare. No maternity leave. Hosting and food and daycare more expensive than ever while wages stagnate. A hostile and dangerous country with zero social safety net. I don’t blame any young people not having kids. |
Hopefully that means everyone who wants a seat at a T20 college gets it, because there’s no competition. Lucky them! |
The world is too crowded so I’m glad we’re doing our part to make it less so. |
+1 |
This describes a lot of non-immigrant Americans. Most of the immigrants I know are highly educated and wealthy. |
Global undesirables? Because some humans are less desirable than others? Jesus. |
This is an extraordinarily stupid comment. The Nordics and some Asian countries that provide generous leave or financial incentives are experiencing just as low if not lower fertility rates. Or do you find them to be “hostile and dangerous” too? |
The PP would probably describe themselves as “Christian” lol |
Can't read the article w/out paying. Does it talk about why 1979 was a low birth rate year? |
Countries with large social safety nets are also seeing precipitous declines in fertility. It's a nice story--that the lack of maternity leave and universal healthcare is preventing women from having kids--but even if true, it isn't the whole truth. Plenty of countries with strong social safety nets are also seeing low fertility rates. Sweden and Norway are both under 1.7. The mood is pessimistic, our government is not operating well, the future is uncertain, we are bombarded with negative messages all day (the environment, politics, pollution, health issues, declines in education, racial tensions). It's no wonder people don't feel like having babies. Kids used to be an asset, they would help run your business, farm your land, raise your other children, sew/cook/clean. Now they are a liability, taking huge portions of your wealth and using it to...I dunno, protest on college campuses?
While immigration can stave off the worst of the consequences like, a lack of people to take care of the elderly or pay any kind of tax into SSA, the culture as we know it will change. Diversity can be good, but it can also be tricky, especially when change happens very quickly. A big part of MAGA is a response to this sudden change in the makeup of the country. It's difficult for people to deal with sudden change and they resist it. When your doctor no longer speaks good English and your kids' school is full of families who need lots of resources that take away from yours, people are going to get resentful. It's a vicious cycle and I don't think the US is up to the task of managing it, based on our gov't. I had one kid. I sometimes regret not having more because I like my culture and its emphasis on hard work and education, financial stability, volunteering, kindness, and the arts. But the culture will change, and the country along with it. Civilizations rise and fall. We are prioritizing our feelings over hard work right now and that's not a recipe for success. |
Only stupid people are breeding |
countries that provide this have lower birth rates than we do. We need to encourage more immigration. |
Well said, and secondly, births are only trending down if you cherry pick the last few years and believe numbers without context. |
