Using weekend to travel for work

Conferences often start Mon morning and then ppl travel on Sunday. We don't have comp time but ppl take it informally.

Our work events like retreats and internal gatherings - no, these are usually scheduled mid-week so travel is on weekdays.

Lucky you! I’m a fed and have weekend work or weekend work travel perhaps 10-20 days a year with no comp time.

Federal govt allows travel comp but as ses I do not get. Depending on where it is I might travel Friday and stay the weekend.

This is so silly. My wife joins me on some board trips and executive holiday parties as they are couples things.

Should she get comp time?

Your wife is voluntarily travelling. You’re being required to travel by your employer. They need to pay you (have you travel during work hours or give comp time) for the things they ask you to do.

yes it happens all the time at my current job and pretty much all subsequent roles. also common for clients to do this. my current role does not give comp time, but prior roles have.

I think if you have a job that involves a lot of travel then that has to be worked out during the job offer negotiations.

As per the comment above, I would not volunteer 450 hours / year of my weekend time for the company unless there had been some serious benefit negotiated that made that worthwhile.

When you travel infrequently as part of the job, comp time - either formal or informal is usually something you get. You aren’t expected to donate your weekends to the company. If you have to go - there should be compensation for time worked or travelled on a weekend. If you are asking /choosing to go to a conference, then that is different and I wouldn’t expect to get time back for a one off that was at my request.

I have to do this occasionally and don't get comp time for it. I didn't get comp time for travel in my last job, either. I get that comp time for weekend/evening travel is common, but it's not universal (for exempt employees, anyway--if you are exempt they legally need to give you comp time in the same week or pay you overtime).

The last part should read if you are NOT exempt they legally need to give you comp time in the same week or pay you overtime.

To those who get comp time for travel, do you also get comp time for hours over 40 worked? Because I've never gotten either comp time for travel or extra pay for extra hours (worked at 5 different companies over 30 years). This is what "salary" means - you put in the hours necessary to get the job done (as long as they are 40 or more).
