Advance Math - for non AAP kids

My DD took an assessment test at the beginning of 6th grade, and they put her in 7th grade math. That’s how it worked for us.

* And I would caution you against pushing your child into advanced math unless they are absolutely ready. ES and MS “AAP” math really does not matter - what matters is that your child gets a solid foundation for math. All three of my kids were in gen ed math (my DD skipped to 7th grade math ion 6th grade, but did not do Algebra in 7th — she instead did 8th grade math). My DD took AP Calculus in HS and earned a 5 on the test, while some of her formerly AAP friends did not. That solid foundation matters.

OP Here: Thanks for everyone’s input. At our school it seems like testing into advanced math is a back whole. AART was not clear on the tests/tests scores needed to qualify. Not one non-AAP kids was in Advanced math in my child’s grade this year (only AAP kids). I am not sure how that is possible, there many smart kids that are not in AAP. We are at a high SES school.

I wish the requirements were FCPS wide like the criterias to take Alegbra I in 7th (IAAT and SOL).

In our center school, only two kids were in advanced math in 3rd and it went up to 7 kids on 4th. It varies by grade.

Do you mean only that number from AAP + gen ed pool of kids, or just looking at gen ed kids taking advanced math?

in our small public school, half the grade was in "advanced math" and there is no way they all tested in being there but they had to have two sections of math so half were in regular and half were "advanced."

Does it vary school by school? Does FCPS have guidelines. Thanks.

We use IReady.

iReady is not a good diagnostic tool.

At our school there were new criteria announced multiple times this year:

- pass advanced on last year's math SOL
- >90th percentile on last spring's iReady
- something from maybe CogAT for 2nd? Can't remember that one.

Any one of those (not all combined) would get a kid eligible to move up to advanced math. We had several kids make the switch and I think it's great. We are an AAP center, so we have plenty of advanced math classes for kids to join.

Just additional kids joining AAP math class from gen ed.

AAP kids will be in advanced math as their AAP curriculum

It is for math. If a kid is scoring in the 90s they should be in adv math.

This is not happening at our school. Quite a few kids would qualify.

If the kid is scoring in the high 90s and not getting in, then entry is going to be based on who can ask/badger/cajole the principal.

Well then you should ask your principal about it (if you care, that is). At our school they told us the push to put more kids in advanced math was coming from Superintendent Reid, who wanted more kids in Algebra 1 Honors earlier.

This. We looked at kids who scored in the 80s or higher and passed SOL with good scores. I had 4 kids make the jump from regular and 2/4 scored great on IAAT. I have Level 4 kids who scored in 60s on IREADY in Fall. Not a ton but enough to decide we should be allowing kids who scored higher on that in Adv Math.
