I think you are confusing BS’ing with honesty and objective perspectives. Sounds like you were ad libbing/shooting from the hip and did great.

Congratulations op!

I have zero sales or software experience, but am very knowledgeable about the industry that they're branching into. I was sitting in on a demo the VP of sales was doing for a big potential client and halfway through it, the VP's internet went out and Zoom defaulted me to be the host. I don't even have internal access to anything yet and haven't even seen the demo. I told the client that I came from a business similar to his, that I really resonated with his pain points and shared some examples, and I was honest that I was on this call for training and don't have access to screenshare the demo, but that from what I've seen, it solves all the pain points and more then rattled off some of the features I saw yesterday. I literally BSed my butt off for 20 mins praying the VP would get back on. Finally, I ended it and said the VP would just call the client to talk through pricing.

The VP just texted me "Ding ding ding deal closed- THANK YOU. Client loved you. This one brought us over our monthly goal line. It'll be partly yours. Will update *boss*"

I'm so pumped. I'm supposed to have 6-8 weeks of training before I get the chance to sell/earn commission. I know it was a total fluke but after being unemployed for the last few months this is a big one for me.

whoah so cool

Or he intentionally pulled the plug to see how you would do on your own, sink or swim, and if you faltered you would be out of a job by the week's end.

Great job, OP! Not everyone could pivot so nimbly in that situation or connect so well. I think you have a bright future there with client and VP fans already!

Thanks for sharing, I'm job hunting and your story made me smile.

I would be wary of this scenario. “Internet out” for 20 minutes? He could have easily connected through his phone into the zoom meeting if his home internet dropped out as you describe.

This was definitely some kind of setup…
