summer team burn out?

How do you recruit fast swimmers? How does that happen???

That seems insane.

My kid has wavered on whether to do summer swim even without the issues you mentioned. Sometimes it's just too much to do a meet every week. He decided to keep doing the summer team but not swim every A meet (we're on a small team in a mid-level division).

We do both, but LC is the "serious" thing and summer is for fun with friends. They just love the meets.

We get completely fried but go to the beach in August and regroup.

Same. My kids would never give up summer swim so we make it work. I do give them the choice of attending club or summer practice. My older, serious swimmer attends all club practices whereas my younger one does about half and half.

My kid would love to skip swimming summer swim and just be a coach while only swimming LC meets. But she feels like she can't do that without people thinking she's a jerk, so she's not!

I would just note that the “disorganized board” is probably a group of parent volunteers with full-time jobs outside of summer swim. Not sure which league you’re in, but the workload for the volunteers that run these teams is no joke. Please don’t take them for granted. If you don’t like the job the board is doing, then I hope you’re putting in the same level of time as they are to try to improve things.

Our pool's board has some parents whose kids are not even swimming anymore , they are the gatekeepers and often time very disconnected.

Those parents are losers. They need a life and need to stop being control freaks. Move on.

Our team has been losing for years, maybe win one meet a season. But we all still come back for the fun. There are kids that to club swim in the summer also and it kinda ruins the team dynamic because they practice with the club team. But, oh well. They are missing out on the fun. Some people take all of this too seriously in the summer. Have fun! It’s summer swim. Chill.

Certain clubs (like Rockville Rays in Montgomery County) are not neighborhood-based and are known to recruit swimmers.

Are there people trying to get on the Board that are being denied? Our pool has to beg people to get on the Board. We put out 5 calls for Board members every summer and don't get enough people interested to fill open seats.

I'm sure you have put your hat in the ring, right?

Our pool never had an open call for Board members. But you sounded like a volunteer who begs to be praised.

I’ve heard of teams recruiting too, especially in the A-D divisional. Parents suck. Just let the kids have fun. They have fun regardless. We’ve been losing for the last 8 years. Been at the bottom of our division. Most of the time. We god back every year because it’s fun for the kids.

For sure. I’m well aware and have put in more than a fair share of volunteering for many years (part of the burnout!). But boards and coaches are in charge and make the decisions. Their disorganization or lack of commitment has a huge impact and it hurts the experience for families.
