nap time at school when your preschooler no longer needs a nap

Totally agree to avoid if possible! The last 6 months of daycare (age 3-3.5) before DC pre-K3 were an absolute nightmare because of napping. She'd fall asleep with the other kids since it was her routine and then would be up until 10:30 or 11:00 at night. As soon as she switched to pre-K and stopped napping, the problem solved itself. No way would I sign myself up for that voluntarily.

I sent mine to a 2-5 daycare where they enforced having to actually lay in your cot that whole time, no alternatives. It wasn't great.
My 5 yo, who went as a drop in one day, confirmed the same.

What’s the big deal about kid falling asleep at 10? I don’t understand “the horror”. Yes we all want our 2 hours of adult time… but you work around it and get the chores done and life goes on. Why make it into a tragedy?

It's after my bedtime 🥱 and for us it was getting towards 11pm, not 10pm. My DH reports before 6am in DC.
My son also wasn't sleeping but it would still affect bedtime so his total sleep was reduced.
Not a tragedy but not best practice either. It's also okay to say something doesn't work for your family and to find alternatives that do that's not a tragedy that's smart

Perhaps that time needs to be used for focused work, exercise, getting other kids to bed, going to bed early, s*x , meditation or the 10 million other things that its much harder or impossible to do well with a 3 year old hanging on to you. Fascinating you can't imagine this yourself

LOL

Children needs rest! If they sleep is because they need the nap time

Is a requirement of the state that children that age sleep at least 2 hours

At centers, big classrooms of 2 years old and 3 years old they all slept at least 2 hours.

They don't want cranky kids in the afternoon

No it is not- SO TIRED of the misrepresentation, or sometimes outright lying, by daycares and licensed providers. Copied directly from COMAR.

.03 Rest Periods.
Each child shall be provided periods of rest appropriate to the age, needs, and activities of
the child.
INTENT: For proper development and growth, children must be given regular,
adequate rest periods.
INSPECTION REPORT ITEM: “Rest Periods”
COMPLIANCE CRITERIA: Each child is provided appropriate rest periods.
ASSESSMENT METHOD: Observation of rest periods. If observation is not possible,
discussion to determine the program’s rest schedules.
Note:
There is no requirement that children must rest or nap for a specific
length of time. The length of time that children nap or rest must be appropriate to
their individual needs.
However, based on general developmental characteristics,
you may wish to use the following suggested nap/rest timeframes for planning your
daily program.
Morning and afternoon naps for 1 to 3 hours ( 0 – 2 years old )
Afternoon nap for 1½ – 3 hours ( 2 – 4 years old )
Afternoon rest – quiet activities for 30 minutes to one hour ( 5 – 6 years old - - - )

Youve got kids in other posts still napping 1-3 hours at 5+. Youve got other kids who drop naps at 2.5/3. The average is somewhere in the middle where a 1-2 hour rest time for 3-5 year olds is fine but they cannot be made to nap.

If the kids sleeps then needs the nap

And we are continuing to talk about kids who dont sleep.... even when in a dark room for 2 hours. With nothing to do. Although we know that's the point because 99% of kids will fall asleep even if nap time is 1-3 and they fall asleep at 250, you people will hang on to the idea that the kid needed the nap and was sleepy
