Can anyone explain why there is no school on Tuesday June 4?

Actually they did a survey a few years ago and did what parents asked for—no half days (extends the year four days), spring break always aligned to emancipation day (one less day off but not aligned to Easter). When DCPS asks for your option, give it to them.

People wanted spring break this late?? It’s crazy but I didn’t realize anyone wanted this. It must have been back when there was a February break though, right?

Yes, it worked better when we had February and April breaks, but even with eliminating the February break, the majority still wanted it tied to Emancipation Day.

There's only one more calendar already in place (SY24-25) so keep an eye out for the engagement opportunities to design the next set, and speak up!

While I do think it's an odd time for spring break and complicates coordinating with non-DCPS friends and family, we have noticed that crowds are lighter and reservations are easier than what we've heard during the traditional before or after easter weeks.

An election that virtually no one bothers to vote in. But, sure, let's cancel school.

Well, it only takes one whack-job with an AR 15. They wouldn't cancel school if they didn't use the schools as voting precincts.

I get that, and so be it if that’s what most people are asking for, but for me it’s much quieter at work/easier to take time off during the traditional spring break weeks, because that’s when people around the office are on break with their kids and expect that others will be less available. Lighter crowds and easier reservations haven’t done a lot for my kid who is home this week because we couldn’t take off work right when all of our projects are catching up because everyone else was on spring break a few weeks ago.

In fairness, that’s all it ever takes. I walk straight into my dcps ES all the time. There’s nominally a security guard and I march right past the office, but no one stops me.

Primary Day is General Election Day in DC. Which is ironically why our schools are some of the worst in the country along with most all the other red and blue one party states.

My school was a polling center when I was a kid. We were open on election days, they just roped off the gym. It’s far from necessary to close schools just because of Election Day.

My current DCPS kid’s DCPS elementary school was open on Election Day back when my kid was in Pre-K. Then Sandy Hook happened (and Comet, and Burke, etc., etc.) and people began to look differently at the security problem.

You have to let a bunch of random people into a school building on elections day while class is in session. It’s a safety issue. I agree with another poster that they should just use libraries and rec centers

It’s also a space issue. Election machines take up a cafeteria…where do kids eat? In their classrooms and given the rodent problem in DC, NOBODY wants that!

From the DCPS Calendar page:

We want to thank the more than 1,300 members of our community who shared their opinions. These comments were crucial to finalizing these documents. For example:

Community members confirmed that they preferred a 3-day vacation over the Thanksgiving holiday, a spring break aligned with D.C. Emancipation Day, and midterm parent-teacher conferences. They also mentioned ending the school year by the last week of June as a top priority.

Community members expressed interest in a longer winter break when possible.
Families expressed that several partial weeks can be difficult to manage child care. Where possible, we combined days off (e.g. vacations, professional development days, conference days) to reduce the number of partial weeks.
We heard the importance of giving students and staff a day off in March. This change is now incorporated into the calendar.

To make these changes, the upcoming calendars now include a long weekend in February and a weekend during March, instead of a full week off in February.

While we’re at it, the midterm conferences are so strange. Seems like it should be better aligned with when we get report cards.

But basically seems like I’m just very out of step with whoever was filling these out.

Love the big priority of ending by the end of June. Was DCPS going into July??? It feels like the school year goes so much later than the other school systems we’ve experienced already. Probably because of all these random breaks and days off.

Huh? No we don't. We want to be done earlier in June.

As a result of this day off students’ last day of school is a Monday. You think teachers want that??!!

Teachers don’t want that day off. It’s only delaying the end of the year.

Two years ago (I think) schools were open on primary day, which was a day or two after the Uvalde shooting. I’m a dcps teacher, I cannot describe to you how horrifying it was to see strangers coming in the building that day, even with that part of the building blocked off.

That didn't take long for the anti-teacher rhetoric to begin. Are you sure it wasn't the union?
