Maybe their yield rates have increased, so they accept fewer total kids? It is odd since their total applications dropped.

Their ED apps dropped, but it looks like RD applications more than made up for it.

No their ED apps went up majorly, by like 30%. Their apps went up in ED and RD, it just became more competitive this year in general.

+1 their applications increased in both ED and RD. So both rounds were just harder than class of 27. But that was to be expected, most of the tippy top schools had an increase in applications this year, I believe both Yale and UPenn also announced an increase like Duke.

Pretty sure the full scholarship to SC and NC families making under $150k helped increase applications as well.

But yet the college tuitions for full pay families seem to be going up? I support financial aid fully but those of us paying full tuition are now paying $85-$90K for college. At some point that will not be doable.

Duke is pretty generous with financial aid from what I've read. Also there are more than enough people willing to pay full freight for a Duke education so they probably feel comfortable matching inflation with their cost increases.

These colleges accept more and more applications (collecting more and more $$) so they can then tout their "most selective class ever" to make parents feel better about paying more and more $$. It's marketing. Don't fall for it. If your kid got into Duke, you're probably smarter than that.

Because that’s the only party benefiting from this.

You're forgetting the 96% of applicants who now stand a chance to avoid becoming total a$$holes.

That's a nice way of coping but my DS would be over the moon if he gets in today. If a rejection comes I might be singing a different tune though

One of my nicest and smartest friends went to Duke undergrad. Very successful in both career and family/friends. Sometimes people can have it all and that's OK.

Wow, that means Duke is now projected to be more selective than Princeton this year.

I’d pick in state UVA over Duke in a heartbeat

Depends what you can afford. We can afford Duke and we'd pay the extra for the degree, would be very happy with UVA too though. I'd rather set my kids up with the best education over something like a nicer car, but I think this equation is mostly for upper middle class folks who would have to pick and choose. A car will be nice for 10 years, but the Duke name would follow our kid for life.

+1 Duke undergrad is a unique opportunity that would set a great foundation, definitely would stretch financially to pay for my daughter to go. It's a top 10 school and hyper selective for a reason.
