Crate for large dog

The OP's dog is a puppy. Puppies, like human babies/toddlers, are impulsive and will often eat anything, including electrical wires, plants, furniture, drywall, etc.

Having the puppy crated in a safe place when it can't be directly supervised is a good option, at least until the dog is more trustworthy and has outgrown its "puppiness."

Op here - thank you. We have had other dogs before and once they are trusted have left them out when we are gone. We just can’t trust this puppy yet. She has a ton of energy and no impulse control. When we are home she is out of her crate. If we know we will be gone for long periods of time during the day we send her to doggy daycare. Other than bedtime (when she sleeps in her crate) she isn’t in her crate for more than an hour or two at a time.

Definitely crate the puppy at home. We have a wire screen for the back of our SUV.

I don't agree with the conventional wisdom, OP.

Our medium size dog loves his puppy crate we got for him when he was small, and prefers it to the enormous crate we got him where he's able to sit, move around, etc. Said large crate is HEAVY and I find it nearly impossible to maneuver by myself (my teen son or husband generally deal with it). Since we foster dogs, we use it only when we need an extra crate, otherwise we fold it away and store it in the basement.

I advise you to buy the largest wire foldable crate you can manage and where your dog can curl up and sleep. He needs ventilation. A Gunner is very safe, but not as ventilated. It might not be large enough for him to sit or do laps in, but since he won't be in it for the entire day, it should be fine. Canines in the wild sometimes use dens and if you watch documentaries you'll see those dens are tiny for adults!

The Gunner looks very nice and all, OP, but just remember that most people, even the most responsible breeders, don't spend that much.
