College packing list for boys

Anonymous
New Bedding, new pillows, new mattress topper, hangers, over the door mirror, fan, “medicine chest” (I put together a ton of OTC medicine, first aid, condoms, etc), toiletries, detergent, plastic organizers for under the bed. He had things from his room from home he took to hang.

So different from the girls on his hall. 😂

Again, check the info from the school. Many dorms will already have one in the room.

Wow never heard of that...good to know. My kids had to bring it or rent.

+ deodorant

Otherwise this is 100% spot on.

Sleeping bag. They don’t wash the sheets anyway.

Don't get too much more than he'll need. You'd be just floored by the amount of stuff that gets tossed at the end of the school year. It's actually quite shameful the amount of waste during move-out day.

Make sure they're the right size. It's annoying having to interrupt a steamy session to run out for Magnums at 2am. I know from experience.

Strip lighting like Govee - they like for cool lighting. I feel like this is the biggest decor thing the guys like.
Command/putty/strips to hang posters (that they will often buy at school poster sales)
Command wall shelf to hold small stuff
Theraflu (they ALL get sick in the Fall), Tylenol, aspirin, band aids, neosporin, benadryl, anti itch cream, thermometer etc
Wastebasket and liners
Laundry detergent sheets - lighter and packable than a jug.
Shout spray
Ikea bag for laundry
Tissues
Order a bunch of Ikea frakta zipper bags for storage and transit back and forth (we double for flights)
A fan is great even if there is air con. Helps with noise and with not great functioning air con
Chargers, cable, external batteries
Desk pad
Electric tea kettle gets a ton of use for hot chocolate or theraflu or whatever
Shower caddy. Mine like fabric. Some like plastic
Ziplocs. Gallon. Chip clips
Small dish soap.
One set of towels. Not a lot of room for extra sheets and towels
Bathrobe for shower or a large enough towel. Whatever they want. Let them pick stuff out.
Hanging over the door shoe thing. Holds a lot of stuff.
Over the door hooks. Amazon. Very helpful for raincoats (pack that) etc
3 inch mattress topper is nice if you can do. A comfortable bed is the best
mattress pad
Usually Twin XL sheets. Check with school for twin or twin XL
Hangers. Mine likes thin metal ones that take up less room. Space is at a premium
Shower shoes/slides
Moccasins or slides or something to lounge around in the dorm
Maybe another seating option like a cheap Costco lounge chair, or an ottoman that has storage inside
Coordinate with roommate about fridge.
Coordinate with roommate about tv if having
Coordinate with roommate about area rug. Cheap at Aldi, Ikea, Homegoods. You won't want it coming back home
A couple of plastic utensils/plate/bowls or a few metal, just to have
Two sets of sneakers
A nice outfit - khakis, jacket, tie, shoes - you never know - they have social stuff they're invited to
Roach motels, ant baits
Damp rid. We got the plastic containers vs the hanging ones
Maybe a stick vacuum if you're feeling generous
Clorox wipes.
Air purifier if moldy dorm
A door stop as someone suggested is great. Keeping doors open at first makes it easier to meet people
Desk seat cushion maybe
A couple of plastic storage bins with lids, different sizes, and a couple OXO food storage bins.
Desk hutch topper if appropriate
Huge Britta container got zero use.

Hope this helps
It's all great. Summer before can be anxious for them. This is a way for them to get invested and excited, thinking of it all

What about dress clothes? Would they have any need for a suit, or would khakis and a blazer be fine?

In our experience, khakis and a blazer with a couple button downs are fine. A tie. Shoes other than sneakers which we had to buy there having forgotten

Here are great ideas, I thought. Not sure about my son. Huge rolling equipment bag. Much bigger than an ordinary rolling suitcase. (like football coaches would roll to the field to transport equipment). He could have almost everything he owned in there, and it would slide under the bed. A sleeping bag. It could be unzipped and used as a bedspread/blanket. It could be grabbed and taken for an overnight. I thought useful incase he was exiled from his room.

15:19 that's a good list.

My niece narrowed down a quick decision re: who to bring to an important university dinner, by walking down the dorm hall, "who here owns a suit?"
