I have talked to admin. Their response: there is nothing we can do. Hall sweeps? Forget about it. Kids will just “leave” so why have them?

Our school has already said no to 0%. School wide we are still doing 50% because of “equity.”

Find a new school at which to work.

How do you expect them to do that when this is a problem across the entire county?

Which schools are handling this well? If I could find one, I would go there, but my school is as OP described and as my friends in other schools describe.

+1 All the high schools want to blame this behavior on the pandemic. They don’t want to face the music that MCPS has gotten WAY off track and kids know there is no accountability.

We have replaced malls with schools. Kids only go to hang out with friends and walk around.

Why is there no consistency though.
Giving zeros varies from high school to high school and teacher to teacher. How does that make any sense?

Since when is 50% passing?

High School staff member here. Fully released position. Whenever I have free time I'm out there with security and admin trying to clean the place up.

We all want to bring back "law and order" if you will. Trust me, we're busting our asses to do the right thing. But it's like waves of kids every day and there's just not enough people working at the school in this capacity (i.e. not teaching classes to do this work) and too many parents have given up or expect us to be the source of values to instill in their kids (rather then them doing it themselves).

It's sad but I love my colleagues....we're working side by side to push back against this the best we can within a broken system.

Just posted above at 21:19....as far as grades go, trust me these hall walkers are failing classes at my school.

I don't say that as a matter of pride or happiness. But they sure as hell aren't passing.

The problem isn't the skipping as it relates to grades.

The problem is the sanctity of these institutions has been sullied by MCPS. It feels like the people who made these policies have either never worked in a high school before or haven't been in schools for like 10-15+ years.

It's dystopian seeing this. No joke, you parents here would just be so sad. I'm sure some of you would blame us staff. Go ahead if that floats your boat. It's just the policies of the district that leads to this.

Microcosm of society, really......

The policies are baked in colleges of education at various universities and then implemented by delusional leaders who latch onto stupid buzzwords and trends instead of common sense and the basics.

Replying back to you. Agreed 100%. We talk about this all the time at our school. It's a joke.

I would love to see some central office dinguses come model for me, a physically able and mentally confident 40 year old man, how to disperse and redirect a large group of 17 year old boys roaming the halls of the local HS; or selling weed in the bathroom; or letting randos from the community in and out of the back doors of the giant building; or breaking up a group fight between adult-sized teenagers; etc etc etc.

It's so funny imagining some crunchy 60 year old NPR lady from kensington or whatever coming to wheaton or germantown or burtonsville to show us how it's done!

What do you think would help? What kind of policy reforms do you think would be effective? Do you need extra resources (cameras, something else)? More personnel (counselors, SRO’s, aides, volunteers, etc.)?

It’s hard for the public to know what’s needed, and MCPS clearly doesn’t know, but I think if someone could suggest a way to improve things, there’d be community support. With the upcoming election it might be a good time to try to see which candidates are actually interested in addressing the problem.

Better in the hallway than disrupting class.

Why do you think these dropouts care about their grades?

But I agree that kids just hanging out in the hallway or bathroom is ridiculous and I would be furious if my kids were doing this and McPS didn’t tell me.

You get 4 unlawful absences before consequences are possible.

Me again. I'll reply tomorrow but I have to go to bed. I have a lot of thoughts I'd like to share. But I need my rest....gotta have energy for what should be a crazy day with dozens of staff out with the flu (or just getting away from the place for one extra day).

Dang this is a blast from the past.....where did you dig this up from? Haven't heard E3 in a decade.

Bringing back ISS. Say what you will, but if done correctly in school suspension does work. We also need more security. We have (on a good day) 5 security guards. With a population of over 2,000 kids… that is crazy talk.

Also, whatever happened to those doors we had in the old days that would alarm when opened? We have dozens of entry/exit points where kids can leave and come as they want. Doors that still open in case of fire but sound an alarm would help deter that

Where in the dark web did you find that? E3s haven’t been allowed in a LONG time. MCPS doesn’t allow that anymore. Outdated policy.
